Someone told me that one about chickens too.

Yet I suppose they ALL eat meat from the local grocery store and eat meat when they go to restaurants as well - don't they?
Her daughter is a vegatarian...still eats dairy, though, with never a thought to how dairy animals are treated in a commercial operation. I find that most folks are very short-sighted when it comes to their "passionate views"....she can't stand any cruelty to animals but they cater to and buy commercially produced meats and dairy. Her SIL owns a commercial laying operation....

When you try to explain this to them they change the subject abruptly and say, "That's different...I don't have to eat my pets."

Makes it all okay, I guess, as long as you eat other animals and not your own. :he :he :he

IMO, these are the most cruel people of all...those who choose not to see the forest for the trees, though they know the forest exists.

AMEN sister! We have made sure our children know where their food comes from and how it gets to their plates.....sad that this generation is so out of touch with their food.

Just checkin' in....nothing really going on right now. Bought some bedding plants for the garden, much as I hated to do so, as mine did not germinate well.

Everyone is holding off planting anything right now....too worried about that last frost. The Almanac says May 10th.... :/

Hey, y'all, I'm starting a community giving project call Grow A Row, where gardeners grow extra food or donate their extra harvest to someone else. Preferably someone who really needs it but I really just want to give food away. I'm working with the local food pantry to organize a list of those who wish to grow and those who wish to receive so that we may get them together at the appointed times.

Wanna go national with this idea? It's sort of like a random act of kindness but you do it with food....garden produce, fruit, eggs, etc. Call it being neighborly, call it giving freely, call it what you will, but wouldn't it be great if everyone grew a little extra for someone else? No wasted food. New friendships and extra kindness floating around, folks paying it forward when they catch the spirit of it all.....how wonderful a feeling can you get?

Want to join me? :D

I'm planning on just leaving anything I have too much of, in the lobby of my apartment building. Most of the residents are elderly or disabled and usually low income.

I love the idea Bee! I'll pass it on to our community garden organizers. They ended up composting a bunch of extra food last year when they know darn well there's a soup kitchen and food pantry locally that would have loved to have the surplus.
Love the avatar!!

:clap

I love the idea :)

I would be thrilled to join you but alas, no garden this year :(

But when my time comes and I have the space, then I am all in!

This may be too much work, but a couple recipe suggestions would be a nice accompaniment to fresh veggies that may be unfamiliar to folks who don't garden.

I have always wanted to be part of a community garden, just haven't found the way yet. When my older two were tiny, I was feeling a little lost with being home 24/7 while Dh was out in the world. I got a little journal and started writing down some ideas and dreams....one was starting a community garden for kids. Haven't been given the opportunity to do that yet....I am still hopeful though!

Edited to add...we have a local program that is just getting started where people without gardens are paired up with people who have the room but do not want to garden. The gardeners come to an agreement on times/days that they are allowed free access to the property to garden and then they share what they grow with the home owner. Just throwing that out there! (maybe I need to join in! )

DH STILL believes that about turkeys. Because his dad told him so.

Hey, Bee, have you heard of the program Plant a Row for the Hungry? http://www.gardenwriters.org/gwa.php?p=par/index.html
That's a great program and they do just what you are wanting to. Anyone can join in. Just a heads up that there is one you can join if you like, not saying don't start a new program :)

MIL has been talking to DH about butchering, and how could you eat an animal that was a friend or a pet. :he She asked DH yesterday "Doesn't <DD> freak out when you do the deed to the bunnies?"
DH said "Well, mom... Why don't you ask her?" and handed the phone to DD.
She said "Granna, don't you know aaaalllll meat comes from animals? And our meat tastes better cause our animals are happy and we treat them nice."

Out of the mouths of babes :love
