MIL has been talking to DH about butchering, and how could you eat an animal that was a friend or a pet. :he She asked DH yesterday "Doesn't <DD> freak out when you do the deed to the bunnies?"
DH said "Well, mom... Why don't you ask her?" and handed the phone to DD.
She said "Granna, don't you know aaaalllll meat comes from animals? And our meat tastes better cause our animals are happy and we treat them nice."

Out of the mouths of babes :love
Bwahahahahahaha.....I bet that taught her! Yay for your DD!!

Excellent! Gotta love a parent that raises their children to be fearless about the practical things in life.

I suspected there were programs out there, but as yet my community doesn't have one. They don't even have a farmer's market!

I want this to be more than just for gardens but I'm starting there because everyone usually has left over veggies...be it squash or beans, etc. My boss says she has sweet corn that goes to waste! Can you imagine??? Why wouldn't you pick that and give it away instead of letting it go? So I told her about the program but she is kind of strange and didn't seem receptive to the idea.

I would like to expand that into other areas like fruit harvests, eggs, firewood....just about anything you have plenty of that someone else does not.

I learned this week that there is an old fella over the mountain from me that has been doing this for years! He raises a huge garden just to give it away, buys chicks to raise and gives them away~several times a year! , gives all his eggs away....all this on a fixed income.

Just think if he had been in a network and others began to hear of what he is doing...and started seeing that you don't have to have a lot of money to be able to give. When you give, God gives back so you have not lost a thing and you have gained so much more!

People know I'm supporting a family on one income and they know I don't make much money, so they are puzzled as to why I would give stuff away instead of selling it. I want them to be puzzled. I want them to SEE that it isn't about what I have or do not have....it all came from God, so it is not mine to keep. God will give me more when I've given all of that away! Not for my glory but for His....maybe to teach folks to walk on faith? I'm not really sure but I'm just trying to obey this call.

We have a beautiful spot in our town started by the son of a man who always grew a large garden and gave food to those in need. You get a spot fo xx$ and must give a portion of what you grow (20% maybe) to someone in need. Well, we also have the headquarters for a large restaurant chain in our city also. They gave us the start-up $ for our Farmers' Market. This year, they took 2 huge spots in the community garden that will be worked by their chef (and chef trainees) and sold at the market with all proceeds to go to charities. This helps in 2 ways - $ for charity and their chefs learn first hand where their food comes from. I had to go inspect the garden for them to get into our market and I must say - it's impressive.

What a great idea!!! I think it would be amazing if the local restuarants actually took an active role in growing the foods they serve...can you imagine how this would cut overhead and provide a more healthy menu to the public? Not to mention setting an example. And these fellas give it away? How enormous is that?

I would also like to see them buy local farm fresh eggs for their menus but I don't know if there are regulations about such things.

I would love to see everyone just step out on faith about growing things for others....it could never be a bad thing and can only bring blessings on your life.

Even if one can only grow flowers...there are hospice patients and nursing home residents who would dearly LOVE to get a bouquet of fresh flowers now and again. They don't get outside often and don't get to see many beautiful things anymore.

kc, just think of the legacy that man left behind? Better than a memorial, better than a stone in a field of stones...he left compassion behind him and it grew! I could only ask for that one thing in my life...that I be remembered for my compassion for others.

kc, that is awesome.
Bee, I love that you said that. DH will sometimes stop by the nursing home or the adult day center with the kids on his way home, stay 1/2 an hour or more. The residents always enjoy that. They don't get to see many kids and you can see their faces light up when any walk in. They just like to watch the kids play & get an occasional hug. I wish I was able to go with them more, its joyful just to watch. And listen to the older folks tell stories about their past! Oh man! We may be richer in that we tend to have more things, but those folks had rich LIVES.

I've had folks stuff zuchini & tomatoes in my car. But the same folks won't take a box to the food bank. I'll usually drop off extras I get to them. They cook 2 meals a day for unfortunates and love to get fresh produce. They usually rely on canned goods donated by the Salvation Army & local schools.

Noobie, some of the saddest words at the end of a gardening season are, "I wish I had known you wanted _______,I had so many go to waste!" :/

I want to make a list of the "I wish I had knowns" and coordinate it with the "I wish you had told me's" and see if everyone gets to eat fresh veggies this year.

Bee, as someone who wedged myself into this community late in the game, I have a question.
WHO is "the Bat?"
I've been trying to figure out if it's a particular child or a sibling or a close friend or what and I give up! :p
