:weee Little lambs due soon!! Oh, just waite, you will be totally SMITTEN with them!! I can't waite to see pics of your wee ones.
I like the idea on the hive...however, I just dont think I will ever get bees here. Hubby is alergic, and I am ... well...scared! LOL
hopeing to get our garden in soon as well. All this rain, and cold has really put a damper on the gardening season here. :/ Hopeing to get my beets replanted...none of the last 2 rows I planted came up. :tongue to the rain!!

J, it is finally supposed to clear up starting tomorrow...thank God! We needed the rain so badly and now we need some sun for germination and so I can till up some soil.

We also need some warm nights...I guess that will come soon enough, huh?

I will post pics of Little Mo' Money as soon as I can and will keep you posted on new arrivals. :)

My D1 is really enjoying Malcolm. His favorite meal is the seed heads from her problem curly dock crop!! I more and more want to add a couple of Katahdin sheep to her "flock". Buying the cow has my money all planned out for a bit however. :( Still ... maybe I could buy one (or two!!) and make payments or something.

Still livin' sheeple dreams here.

Hey darlin'! Good to see everything is coming right along...I haven't been able to plant anything yet....our weather has been crazy. 60s one day and 90s the next. We actually got down into the 30s last week at night....had to turn on the dang heat....in MAY

Okay, so explain to me how that hive works.....

Farm, I kid you not, I saw Malcolm's twin at this farmer's place!!! I couldn't believe my eyes but this little ewe lamb had almost the exact same coloring and markings as lil' Malcolm...and she had a twin that was almost as pretty. He would not part with them..... :( That was the first one that caught my eye and I said, casually, "How 'bout that little girl right there?"

He laughed and said, "NO WAY! I just KNEW you would want that one!" He and I love the colorful sheep and he retains all the brown and brown marked ones for himself...durn it! :he It was uncanny how similar the coloring and markings were and I've never seen one quite like it there on his place.....beautiful calico lamb! :love

Well, the thing you see is the hive body and the tin lid attached with a hinge is designed to swing open and stand on legs as a work station (my son's idea). The only thing missing, at this point, is the bars that lie across the top opening of this hive body. I'm using 2x2s but the serious, experienced beeks actually measure their bars so that there is only "bee space" between the bars after the comb is built. I think someone mentioned that the bars should be approx. 1 and 7/8 in. in width to allow for comb and bee space.

The bees will build their own comb which will hang down from the bars of wood, in this case the comb will be shaped in a half-moon just like the half barrel shape.

We also have to attach a few follower boards to two of the top bars...this is too hard to explain but they are placed in the hive at first to keep the hive space smaller to suit the amount of bees I will have. As they grow and produce more bees, you move the follower boards outward and add more top bars between them to create more space for comb construction. When the hive is completely full follower boards are no longer necessary, I believe.

Bee, I am so impressed. I wish I wasn't so scared of bee's....I would LOVE to try keeping a hive. There is a guy a few miles up the road, he has several hives...I buy his honey. :p Hubby is allergic to bee's...so, I guess I will just have to live the life of a beek, through you all! :)
