Farmer's Market report

Picked up a pound of kale for $2.50 -that's a grocery bag full! Need to find my recipe for kale & white bean gratin & use that, chop it up and put it with my eggs in the morning.

Got the herbs I needed for the steak seasoning. My rosemary didn't make it through the winter so I got another one for $3.

Also got some hot peppers and sweet peppers for roasting $2 and $2.50 for a big basketful (about 10 each)

3 lbs of green beans for $5.

Pork guy still didn't have my fat. I think he's figured out I'm not going away until he gets me some. I keep telling him he needs to get on his butcher because his butcher is selling it. Anyway, hopefully next week...

Beets were horribly expensive, I'll get those at the grocery.

Just got back from ours a while ago.

13 ears of ambrosia corn $5.00 x 6 - I am going to be freezing some corn today.
2 plastic grocery bags full of canner tomatoes $15.00
and some purple onions $3.00 a box
No beets at all at our market. :/

The beets were super super tiny and not worth my time to skin them for $3/lb (I'd lose 1/2 of them just getting the skin off) or they were $1.50 each for larger ones. Corn always sounds good in my heady but my tummy doesn't like it. I didn't even look at what the corn prices were. Lots of fresh peaches that made the place smell so good, but I just did another fresh pie day before yesterday. I think I'll get some on Tues or Wed and broil them with the maple cream brandy sauce... Apples are finally starting to show up but are still expensive because only two vendors had them.

We had lots of peaches too at the market, but there was no smelling them over the huge mounds of fresh cantaloup! :drool You could smell the ripe cantaloup a couple of blocks away. I didn't buy one today because I still have part of one in the fridge.

No apples here yet. Just plums, peaches, nectarines and heaps of melons. Also huge piles of onions, cucumbers, squash and egg plant. There were three vendors with entire trucks full of the sweet corn. Not a baked good in sight, but one gal with tiny jars of jelly. I was thinking today that Quail could bring her pies here and clean up!

Today's day in the kitchen so far:

roasted the peppers from market (2 batches, hot and sweet -smells SO GOOD!!!) (I can't believe I've never roasted my own peppers before.)
tasted sauerruben from a couple of months ago (tossed it, so bitter it made my lips pucker... gross)
roasted two batches of chick peas (one chile/lime, one italian herb)
started my first batch of fermented ketchup (smells yummy so far!)
started a batch of white beans soaking (for white beans and kale gratin)
steaks marinading in evoo on counter (still need to make the herbed salt mix)
taste tested my first batch of water kefir (had just dumped the others to get it going, tastes alcoholy, unsure, will do some more batches and see)
starting a new batch of kombucha (haven't been making for awhile, want to start up again in case I don't like the water kefir)

Still to do:
sweet potatoes sliced for the chips with tomatillo
cut beets for tartare
herbed salt mix for steaks

Need to be done at 4pm so I can make my own dinner and prep for our big financial meeting tonight so we can figure out exactly where we are with regards to me losing my second job, debt reduction plan, budget, and still moving next year for school, selling this house and buying new house/downpayment, etc. Gotta keep those ducks in a row because they want to keep wandering off if you let them... On a mission, moving toward our goals.

Chickens: still only 3 eggs a day, thought the dogs might be getting some but they've been in the house with me all day and I've only see three hens laying. Maybe I've got an egg-eating hen or maybe I'm just expecting a higher production and they're just not there yet... I did get my first full-size egg today rather than all pullet size eggs. Ridiculous, my whole chicken experiment this year. Next time, pay more and get what I want... don't be penny wise and pound foolish. Okay, onward.

Menu planning: yesterday we ended up having steak for breakfast with fresh green beans. Dinner for breakfast! It was our 12 year anniversary. Then MyT Man treated me to a late lunch at a nice Mexican restaurant. Then we hit the mall.

I never did get the beets done on Sunday, it takes me awhile to do things because so many of them are new to me. Loved the sweet potatoes with tomatillo!!! Will definitely make again. The chickpeas were not all that great. Some turned out hard as rocks while others where still too chewy/raw tasting in the middle. So tonight is leftover steak and green beans and back to the kitchen to rethink.

This is what I have to work with Beets/ brussel sprouts/ cabbage/ green beans/ white beans & kale (to be made into gratin tonight) / taco seasoned ground beef, veggie soup, kimchi, zucchini, and sweet potatoes. Sounds like I have enought for an army!

Oh, my anniversary present is going to be the meat tenderizer. I ordered it last night. Will report back when it comes. Also got 4 eggs yesterday!

I know, I know. My doc told me not too much red meat at any one meal for right now. Moderation I guess. Anway, I don't think that a 16 oz steak is moderation...

Been eating burgers with various toppings, green beans and white beans/kale gratin. Menu planning later this afternoon. I planned way too much food last week.
