Thanks everyone! It was a nice calm quiet birthday with only a small thunder storm later. Unfortunately what I didn't realize was that when DH put our Sunsetter awning back up (after taking it down for Wednesday's tornado warnings) he only put up a few of the rain guard supports because he was in a hurry. We had so much rain last night that it broke the side supports and the whole thing came crashing down this morning. On me. It pinned me between the table and the wall of the house. I wasn't hurt but I couldn't get out. It broke one of the patio chairs which went flying by me and would have cut my leg badly if it had made contact. Scary. I couldn't answer DH at first when he was calling me to see if I was okay. He was on the other side of the collapsed awning and couldn't see me. It knocked the wind out of me. He's trying to put it back up now. He thinks he can fix the parts that broke. He's good that way. It's a good thing because we can't afford a new one and they don't make replacement parts that fit one this old. At least not all of them. The awning is not a luxury here, but a necessity. We saved for three summers after he built the deck to buy the full sized one. The deck is on the south side of the house and is unusable in the summer without shade. We do have a huge market umbrella that friends were going to throw out. It's in perfect condition and came with their new house. They just didn't like it. We can use that if the awning isn't repairable. It just won't offer as much shade. We have verticle blinds in the slider to keep the heat out. It will be alright one way or another but shouldn't have happened.
It's going to be in the high 90s today with heat index in the 100s. A lot of you have been having this weather and today it's our turn. We're sticking close to home rather than doing something for my birthday like we had originally planned. Too much to do. I will be going through closets and cleaning off flat surfaces, probably in the a/c bedrooms. I don't do hot and humid. I'm just glad that it's happening today and not next week when DS and I are off to Cub Scout day camp together. It looks like at least our first three days are going to be in the 80s and less humid.
We may drive to the shore this evening for a walk on the beach. We'll see. Depends what the weather is going to do later. Gotta fit milking in to the schedule too. The beach is an hour from us. I don't want to go on a hot Saturday with everyone else. I do NOT like the beach when it's crowded. I actually prefer it in March at about 3am. That's when we used to go in college. We'd pile into a car and drive hours from New Haven to RI just to see the real Atlantic rather than Long Island Sound.
Rambling when I have soooo much to do! I'll be taking lots of breaks today though I bet!
Forgot the duck nest update: DS and I have each found a duck egg lying on the ground, broken open and rotten. So I checked Louise's nest when she was off of it this am. Empty with nasty goo everywhere. No sign of ducklings that might have been ready to hatch next week. Don't know how these things work. Don't know where the eggs went. Trying not to think that one of the dogs was involved. I don't think they were going to hatch. I'm relieved that we'll have that many fewer ducklings to deal with. I have not checked the nest behind the barn yet. I get attacked if I go back there. The ducks are being so nasty to each other. It's like a soap opera. This couple isn't getting along with that couple. The girls are all jealous because the drakes are cheating.... ridiculous creatures.
