Uh oh, it all just hit the fan at MIL's house! You see, for years SIL and family have flown in from Iowa to NY and spent most of the week if not all at MIL's house. Well, now SIL is going through a divorce, nephew is at an Eastern college, SIL is trying to run a business, etc. And all we heard at Thanksgiving time was she was having trouble finding a flight and would let us know what was going on as soon as she knew. Well, I nagged DH to call her to find out if we were just doing gifts for the kids again this year. He did and she mentioned that she and niece were driving out and leaving early Sunday morning because they had to be home for an event at SIL's business on Tuesday. Okay.... wrench in the works since we'd planned on staying home and going down on Sunday. MIL always does a Boxing Day tea with friends so the holiday is still in full force and we get to have Christmas at home without 3 hours of travel. That's not going to work. Sooooo, I nagged DH to call his mom to see if she had a preference for whether we come on Friday or Saturday. I'd prefer to be home Christmas Day but I'd also like to make sure we are in church for the Christmas Eve service. So he called. And MIL had no clue that this is what SIL was planning. She's been planning this Boxing Day to-do and no idea SIL and kids weren't even going to be there! DH felt awful, apologized over and over for upsetting her. She isn't upset with us at all (for a change) and is just thankful that we called to check in, otherwise who knows when she would have found out. Oy! Family!! All in all we have nothing to complain about. We will all manage to be together at Christmas time. But for about three years running I have NOT been the bad guy who ruined Christmas because I have the nerve to want to spend some time here at home..... 'bout time!

Just got back from a quick trip to ToysRus and the nearly bare Lego shelves. We did fine. I had a buy one, get one half off coupon for Lego sets so I got 2 smaller sets for DS. Mom came with me and got 2 also. Then we saw they had a sale on all video games, same deal, buy one get one half off. So we got him games too. He is done except his stocking stuffers. Whoot!
One evening this week I will take him out shopping for DH. DH has promised to give me a wish list for 2 weeks now. And all of it is going to be stuffed I'd have to order. So it's going to get interesting!
Gift cards for DB and his girlfriend. Mom will probably get one too, plus something from DS. Dad, I've already got the Mark Twain autobiography for but DS will have to get him something too.
The biggest relief is not planning on doing any homemade goodies this year. I've always planned big, stressed about not having enough time, then felt like some of the recipients didn't really appreciate all the work. So I gave myself permission to take this year off from it. No cookies, DS and I can't eat them. I'm not waiting in line at the Italian bakery on Christmas Eve morning like we've done for two years, to get cookies and Torrone candy.
What a relief!

Ugh, made one of those bad Mom decisions. DS woke up whining that his stomach hurt. I watched him for a bit. He didn't get sick, didn't have a fever, wanted to eat a small breakfast. He was still a little whiny at the bus stop but seemed like he was going to be okay. Uh uh. He got sick on the bus and I hadn't been at work for 10 minutes before the school nurse was calling. I got myself signed out and headed out to get him. He's curled up in bed, back in his jammies. He feels a little better now that he's gotten sick. The nurse said she sent 3 of the third graders home yesterday. That's 3 out of 15! Definitely something going around. Hopefully he'll be better tomorrow. Unfortunately he's missing the school band's Christmas performance and Mass where they were going to be singing his favorite hymn. Plus it's a half day. From my point of view-good, he's not missing a lot of work. From his-not good, he's not missing a lot of work! Oh well!
I will get some cleaning done and put away some things to make room for Christmas decorations. His coat is in the wash. It did not fare well on the bus trip. :/
Don't know what I'm going to feed him when he feels up to eating. It used to be toast, jello and ginger ale. He can't eat any of those anymore. Hmmm, gonna get interesting.

At the moment you wouldn't know he was sick at all. Well, he has no appetite still... He's lying on the sofa giving me directions for putting up Christmas decorations.

So far we have a Lego fireplace, stocking, tree and presents as well as Santa, complete with sleigh and reindeer. One elfen tree house (Dept. 56) and 4 clean and polished candle sticks. Our Christmas decorating tends to be on the eclectic side.
