My writing style has developed into some strange combo of cursive and print. Knowing it is wonderful for having to take notes though. I have heard of professors banning laptops in class due to people not actually using them for not taking but just for chatting, etc. I can't tell you how many times my sister was supposed to be in her legal ethics class (I know, I know) and was chatting with me on Facebook.

Not being totally heartless, and totally getting that cursive is pointless, I relented and let him go to bed. Since we were 99% sure there would be a snow day today I just told him if there wasn't, I'd wake him up early to finish it. Hopefully next time he needs to do a long project he'll remember to be more responsible earlier in the game! I refuse to be like his classmate's mother, who goes to the classroom every Friday after school and cleans her son's desk and locker. Granted he has some issues but personally I don't think the way she deals with them helps. It looks more like enabling to me.
Judgmental moment of the day over.....
So I'm home. Again. Two snow days in one week. My house should be spottless, right? It's getting closer. Once I get some coffee in me I'll be tackling another area, decluttering as I go! I just did some bins of yarn and have two big bags to give away.
I'll get DS to help DH with the shoveling. He can't handle all of it. This is nice and light so he can do a particular area before he starts playing in it!

Still - I have worked in the school system from elementary through high school levels for the last 17 years. The only real "note taking" happens in high school and not before.

I have school today. While I got a lot done over the last few it always seems that a lot that really needed done got skipped. Oh well.

I've seen some attempts at the junior high level. I never got it until HS. Didn't really do a decent job of it till college.
Every elementary school I've worked in tried to teach them cursive. I had a hard time helping him because I don't use traditional cursive either. I connect some letters, but it's definitely not what I learned in school! Luckily we have a practice book and he could look up and letters he was unsure of. He works very carefully at it but it is definitely NOT faster for a boy his age!
Next time he'll need to get the draft done sooner so he can write a few sentences each night.

NOT Southern, Ca. :)
When transitioning from private to public my son had his IEP. We decided he had bigger things to worry about than learning cursive.

He is excused from it and encouraged to learn to type. We all agreed it is a more useful skill.

But I agree on putting him to work Hen, he should tough it out a bit.

Luckily DS CAN do it. It's just new to him. They've only started learning since Christmas. If I thought he had any issues preventing him from being able to, I'd be in there getting him excused from it too. :)
Still snowing here. We've got about 4 inches so far, but since I'm still in my jammies, I'm guessing!
Time for coffee and bacon. :celebrate

Coffee and bacon? Hang on Hen! I'm on my way! :D

The school discussion is interesting to me, but I'm not caught up on it all yet. My kids learned cursive, it doesn't seem to be mandatory to USE it though. I write in cursive 99% of the time - I can't print fast. My DH only prints and it's barely legible. Thank goodness for computers. Both of my kids can type better than me - they do it in school whereas I never did. That's all I can add for now and not even sure it's pertinent :p Be back later...
