His issues were focus and attention related. Unfortunately that meant the school psychologist immediately started pushing for us to get him on ADHD meds. He hasn't even been diagnosed with it!! Long story short (unless you really want to sift back through my journal) we did out the check lists, talk his pediatrician who didn't think ADHD was the issue (just active, bored 7 yo). We got him to a naturopath who found numerous food allergies. When we took him off those foods we saw quite an improvement.
I love you :D

I'm sooo tired of hearing about kids who have trouble in school and are thrown on medication. That's RARELY what they need.

We struggle. Lots of behavioral issues. So you have a class of 27 2nd graders and 2 are Autistic, at least 3 probably have diagnosed social emotional issues, 75% or more have ADD/ADHD and you have chaos on a good day!
Welcome to my little world. Bwahahahaha!!!

He is out with his dog, his tobaggan and a shovel. I asked him to shovel the steps. He's got one more paragraph to write. But it's going to be really cold this weekend so he needs to be out today with fresh snow and blue skies, being a kid.
I did mention I love you, right??

:D

My step mom actually got mad at me for forcing her kids to go play after every 30-60 minutes of homework. I said, but they are totally finished within 2 hours for me and it takes almost 4 for you with your "sit at the table til it is done rule!"....

Needless to say, we don't get on well.
Abi, I love you too! You are such an inspiration to me (and so many others!!) Anytime I doubt my convictions raising my son I just need to come here and I immediately get perspective. A boy needs to be out in the sunshine whenever possible. He's sledding, running with the Golden, he helped his dad shovel the steps, he brought in the mail. He decided to clean off my car for me. Okay, that was a little scary since it's 17 years old and has a sun roof and he is 4 feet tall. He climbed up on it! I calmly thanked him and asked him to not stand on the sunroof..... all is well.
it is absolutely beautiful out. I will have to put on sunglasses to go to the store later. We haven't seen the sun in days!

Hmmm....how do you go about getting that? My son isn't taking to school very well. He doesn't do too well with change and while as he's gotten older he's done a lot better he still has trouble concentrating and snapping out of his "I can't do this" modes. I wonder if something like that would help him? They've had to call the school social worker in a few times when he refused to calm down or do his work and they've had him work with the OT on a few occasions to better his writing skills. We got two notes sent home from the teacher within a week of each other because he had a "challenging day". IMO - NO CRAP! These kids have been out of school for days due to the snow/ice and for some it's hard to get back into the routine. But alas, we're just pawns in the school system.

Now, in my mind they put a lot of pressure on a 5 yr old these days, but I also understand standards are a lot higher than when I went to school.
Kids should have an IEP if they in any way differ from "normal limits". Gifted students have them as well as students with learning or other problems or even physical restrictions. We ended up getting a doctor's note to get the school district to act on his behalf. It was hard to get action for my son since he is so smart. They just couldn't seem to understand that a person can be very intelligent and STILL be learning disabled. It was a very frustrating time for all concerned.

My son was diagnosed w/ADHD when he was in the 4th grade. He went to a private school at the time. They were supposed to provide certain things for him to make sure he showed up for class w/the correct books, his homework (which I ALWAYS made sure was done the night b4), plus they were supposed to make sure he took home what he needed to do his homework. They never did what they were supposed to do, just wanted him on medicine. I tried homeschooling him, that worked for awhile, then he wanted to go to public school. By that time, he was old enough to drop out if he wanted-which is what he ended up doing. He's now 25. He's never gotten his GED, though he's talked about it at times. He's not stupid, just never fit into a regular schooling situation.

We are going out. To A FUNCTION!!! With grown-up type peoples. It's a benefit for our local no freezer shelter. We know most of the bands playing. There's a big group from church going since our priest is the director for the shelter. I had to put on makeup and everything!! Okay, I'm still wearing cords and boots, but I'll do for the Elks Club.
All the animules are tucked up for the night. It's going to be bitter cold. Two years ago we were at a function at the Elk's Club and DH had forgotten to put de-gel stuff in the Jetta (diesel) and we were good and stranded. Not fun. We took care of that this afternoon. We also got hay, nice 3rd cut stuff from the same place we got it last time. And he has lots so I think we'll be able to buy from him for the rest of the winter/spring! Next year we will have better storage.

LOL. One of the reasons I love my dance class is the once a month dance. It is 2 hours long and it's just music, talk, dancing.

I feel like a kid playing dress up and growed up.

:love
