Except I think it is better for the toe to get more air, so wrapping it up would probably make it worse. :p HennyPenny, I assume you have seen a doctor about your toe problem? I think my dad has some prescription stuff for his and I think he just has flare ups, not a chronic type situation. I don't know for sure . . . it isn't really something you ask about when you talk to your parents, ya know? LOL

I agree with Keljonma about your soaps. I think a rougher look has some merit in it's own right.

When I bought the Costco yeast, I kept some in a jar at room temp and some in the fridge. The stuff in the fridge lasted for probably 3 years and is finally now starting to get weak.

I'm glad the financial situation at home has eased some!

Since I've only made two batches of soap, I don't have many recipes. The olive oil one worked out very well. It's 80% olive oil, 10% coconut oil, 10% palm oil. http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/soaprecipes/a/castrecipe_2.htm Everyone I've given some to really likes it.

I did see a nature path some years ago about it. She suggested not eating any sugar, something about feeding the fungus or something, to which I said "I'll take the fungus, 'kay thanks." :hide But it is not a serious health problem, so there is no need to take a prescription. Even now, only soaking once a day (most doctors will say to do it more), I can see improvement. But it will come back if I skip a couple days or a week. And yeah, open air is really a good way to kill it. No painting the nails, this is a sure fire way to keep the nails moist, and feed the fungus. I have done lots of research over time about this, and from what I can tell, some people have no luck no matter what they try! Even Lamisil doesn't work for everyone! If I manage to get rid of it, I will most likely throw away every pair of close-toed shoes I own and buy new ones. The fungus can live inside for a time and re-infect. (Don't buy shoes from Goodwill unless you live on the wild side!)

Tomorrow is the day... I open the yeast bag!!! Maybe to commemorate the occasion I will make a new recipe! Hmmmmm!

:gig Sounds like how I would react.

If what you eat affects it, try eating more coconut or use coconut soap on it along with the vinegar treatment. Coconut is supposed to be anti-fungal.

Thank you for clearing the second-hand shoes thing up for me, HennyPenny. I have often warned my husband that he might want to be careful, but he thinks I'm just silly of course. I wonder if some people are just more likely to catch such a thing and others are relatively immune? :hu

Drakemaiden- I'm not sure of the actual amount of time it can live, but it can. I think (?) second hand stores spray the inside of shoes with disinfectant, but fungus is so hard to kill that I would not trust Lysol to kill it. Personally, I know I got mine when I took the required freshman swimming course in school. A whole semester of 6th period swimming. Rushing to shower and change to make sure I didn't miss the bus... I remember all the days of shoving wet feet into socks and shoes and sitting on the 30 minute bus ride, and 15 minute walk home... Any wonder I got it??

ETA: Many online sites say that a bad infection is "usually an indication of a weak immune system" and while I'm sure that is true... I have a strong immune system! I never get sick! I think that fact that I am pretty healthy is why my "treatments" generally show results so quickly as compared to other people.

Ugh. I can't belive they required swimming. :p Sorry to hear about the details of how you got it. :/

Interesting insight on second hand shoes. I wouldn't trust Lysol to kill fungus either.

Henny, I have a sugestion for ya, take it or leave it :) . Dr. Tishners mouthwash is alcohol, water, arnica & peppermint oil, and it is great for fungus issues. Plus it smells good.
I just took a small amount of the full strength (you have to dilute for mouthwash) on a cotton ball & applied like polish remover. Worked wonders on my grungy looking toenails. They're pretty now!

NoobieChickenLady- I have heard about using mouthwash, not that specific one, though. I have thought about it, but since most recommend using full strength, that can get fairly expensive. I only fill a washpan with a few inches of water, and a bit (a couple "glugs" from a gallon jug) of vinegar, which is like $2.80. But thanks, and I know about that option if I decided to give an extra kick to my routine every week or so!

Yep full strength, through the Tishners is fairly cheap, and you don't have to soak 'em, just apply tiny amounts. A bottle lasts here for a couple of months and we use it for antiseptic, mouthwash, insect bites, I even put a drop or two in my witch hazel spray for my face. Feels great.

Might I ask you for some pointers on soaps when I get to making? Thats my next project to learn and I was given a "complete guide" book, but books can't answer stupid questions...

Oh, okay! It would be something I'd do after a soak. I really think that anything I apply works best if my nails are soft enough to really absorb, and get as deep as possible.

You can ask any soap question you want, I can't guarantee I'll know, but I'm sure other soapers will come to the rescue!
