This weekend I made three gallons of honeymead. And the things are fermenting, whichmeans so far the project is successful!!!! :weee
I made them with 2lbs of honey each and oranges and raisens. Really simple.
Anyone want the info, I will happily post it.

It's a cold blast here in Texas, not complaining, they are rare and I enjoy the changes. Just bites you in the butt when you walk out the door, you know. :idunno
Im hoping that the cold will stick around for a little while. I'm taking the girls to see the Nutcracker Suite Ballet in Fort Worth. My son just realized he wasnt going and got royally peaved. :rant
He said it wasnt fair and that he should get to go and see the nutcrackers. I told him he was right and I was rude, and next time I would take him. Too late to buy an extra ticket now. Sadly, it wasnt my call about the all girl status, I have a less than thoughtful ex mother in law. It was her call. She left out two other grandsons also, but evidently they were fine with not "going to a girly event." I think he would of loved to go, just wasnt offered.

School is nearly into christmas break. I can't wait. Almost three weeks off. Lots of cooking and fun with the kids. And no school of any kind. Not even gonna think about it. :celebrate

That honey, orange and raisin thing is an almost foolproof way to make mead. I have the best luck doing it that way.

2 - 3and half pounds of honey
one gallon of spring water
one orange cut up, peels and all
25 raisens
fleishman's yeast
1 balloon washed with a pin hole punched in it

Sterilize everything.

Pour half of the gallon out. Add the honey, warm it up in a bowl of hot water first. Add yeast and shake the tar out of it.
Add the orange and raisens.
Put the balloon on top and set on your countertop for 24 hours. So you can watch and make sure your balloon doesnt over inflate. you want the balloon to fill enuf to stand it up but not expand it.

you can leave all this together without even racking (or changing it in to another container.) After about two weeks the fermentation should slow and you can taste it. You should wait up to six months before drinking for best flavor.

I added cherries and a bit of juice to one jug and cinnamon to another. They are fermenting and doing just fine, so I assume its all good.

Anyone have any recommendations. Please do. I'm a newbie.

Gave the mead a taste. :sick It was like orange flavored rubbing alcohol. But I guess thats why it needs to sit for another 5 months or so.But its working. :ya

I get off work at 1 today. then no school or job till Jan 3rd. :weee
One more hour. woohoo.

So I will probably be offline till then, I can read at home but not post. Cant remeber my password, and its only saved here at work. :duc

Hope everyone enjoys their holiday. I plan to see the Nutcracker tomorrow with the girls, then a week alone while kids get to open the 3 or 4 presents from Dollar tree their father's mom buy them. Stare at the tv while he plays video games. Then watch tv quietly when he passes out. Such a great life for these kids. Thanks Texas court system. You all have your head firmly up your arses. :thumbsup

Oh and he does what he does every year, I will get a childsupport check after xmas. So thats really helpful. He pays 400 for two kids, so its not a lot but it would of bought my son some new pants since he's outgrown all of the ones I bot 3 moths ago. :rant
Got the daughter some clothes, she's growing tall lately too. ugh.

sorry bout the rant. A little vent helps now and then.

When the kids get back we are going to have our Christmas, jammies and hot cocoa, christmas movies, usually the grinch and Frosty. Then off to bed to wait for Santa

Next day the play with all the stuff and I make a nice warm meal. Hubby and I sit curled next to the fire and snuggle and since the kids are nice and occupied we spend some time alone and close.

Side note. Hubby and I were being intimate and my 13 year old daughter texts my phone and puts "trying 2 sleep. gawd."

 Hubby and I both started banging on the walls and giggling making all kinds of noise.

She texts again " mooooooom, its not funny, groooosss"

Went to the shelter here and bought a 5 month old red heeler we named Rocky T-Rex. He's just perfect. He goes in tonight to the vet to get fixed and his rabies booster.
I hate to make him sit in a cage for so long, but I have to get him fixed. He was in the shelter for two months before we got him. So he's had a hard life.
Last night I left the water hose on the potatoes and when i went outside to walk in the puddle to get to the spigot, Rocky pops out of his dog house and runs up behind to greet me. Wet paws on my butt under my nightgown. I slid into the mud and he went with me. Had to shower at nearly midnight to clean up. :barnie
But he's just a lil boy and how can I be angry when all he wanted was to love me.
My 8 year old thinks Rocky's the best. We have been talking about getting him a dog for a while now. But wanted to wait till we got the chicken's totally penned. which we have. Now I worry about keeping Rock out of my garden. He does keep the cats out. They hang on the front porch cus the back yard is Dog land. I covered the tato garden with chicken wire, so they should be safe. But I'm not sure it will work for the rest, not against a very active puppy. May just have to fence it in if worse comes to worse.
Well wanted to share the news of our new adopted lil boy. He's brilliant, fetches and drops the ball at our feet. how awsome is that?
