I love your coop, rabbit hutch and duck house!! It looks very neat and tidy. (My chickens and rabbits' house looks like Sanford and Son's!!)
Ohhh BBH, I haven't heard that reference in a long time....got pics?

Lori, when you wrote big wigs, I had to re read that wondering why on earth he would have big wigs (as in hair) at work! :gig
O.k. I'll post this evening when the good computer isn't in use...this frankenstein of a computer I'm on right now has serious issues.

That's funny....chad always calls the big bosses "big wigs" so that's just what I wrote.....never even thought about how that would read to someone outside looking in.....

Oh, and about the Sanford and Son thing, my husband used to drive a 1993 Ford Ranger extended cab pickup that had hit no less than 11 deer, was dented all over (from the deer), missing a side mirror (another deer), dented tailgate (backed into an overgrown fence post) and lots of engine problems, no ac, and a leak in one of the back windows that made the whole truck smell moldy. His friends kept teasing him so much about how he looked like he had driven straight out of Sanford and Son that someone finally sent him the theme song from Sanford and Son for his cell phone ringtone!!!!!!

Chicken swaps are evil.

My granny and papa decided to surprise us with a visit for the weekend and we ended up going into Powhatan for the chicken swap (Pet Chickens of Virginia) and had a blast! My godchildren were there so I got to hang out with them for a while and there were sooooooooo many animals. Saw lots of stuff I'd like to come home with but settled on 10 quail (bob white, tuxedo, and texas a&m) for tyler, I let him pick them out thus the variety, and 10 light brahma chicks for me. The little feathered feet were too cute to pass up. Heather let me hold one of her full grown Brahma roos and he was so solid, heavy, and even tempered. So I decided to try them.

I have the chicks in the duck house for now until the ducks are big enough to go in there, should time out perfectly for the chicks to go into a bigger pen. I got home and built a quail pen for free. Had everything here at the house. I ended up spending 25 dollars on the birds, total, and that was egg money so it was like I got them all for free! Chad wasn't too angry with me......he secretly really wanted quail too :D

Had a wonderful visit with Granny and Papa and got to hear some more chicken stories about my great grandma. To quote my granny "you are reminding me so much of my mama with these birds it is pitiful. You give her any kind of fowl and she was happy. Used to sit on a bucket out in the yard and talk to her chickens all afternoon long. You remind me of Lizzie Amos more than a little bit!" I took that as a compliment of course. :D

I have a couple of pics of the quail and new chicks to share

Congrats on the new additions! I've actually been known to come home from a swap empty handed. Not often, but sometimes! It's not easy. :p

Okay, please tell me how a dog gets a 3 inch long slit in the middle of his tongue?

Tonka, our black lab and hunting dog, got out of his pen Saturday night and ran off (he doesn't listen to me, only daddy). I went in there cause I noticed a tick on his ear and wanted to get it off. When he came back he went right into his pen no problems. Sunday morning Chad noticed that his lip looked swollen but not cut or bloody or anything so we left him alone. Sunday evening Chad went to check on him and let him out to play and noticed that his tongue was cut right down the middle in the middle but not all the way through the tip. Weird. I called the vet and they want to see him but don't have any available appointments for a month so she said that I was welcome to walk in at 3pm and wait today to see if they could squeeze him in. :th

Why me?

At least I only have one child this week, Madelyn decided to go home with Granny for the week and we are going up next weekend for a week. Chad said he would meet me there since Tonka only has ears for him. :barnie

Nice new additions and that is cute that you are taking after your great Grandma :)

What are you going to do with the quail? Eat them? Breed them?

Sorry to hear about the dog....dog's are dumb and get into too much trouble!

I was told the quail should start laying in 2-3 weeks so we are thinking of hatching some if we can get an incubator and possibly eating some later. We only got 10 but Chad already wants to turn the pen on it's side and get more. I had pallets and built the hutch kind of tall with the idea that we could turn it later if we got more birds and they needed more space. We'll see what happens. :)

Maybe your pup was licking a can lid in someone's trash and cut his tongue?

Love the little feathered footsies! Soooo cute! :)

Tuesday

After spending 2 1/2 hours at the vet he did nothing for Tonka's tongue. He said to keep him on the antibiotics that we had him on for a week and see if it heals up on its own and if not then take him back in and they will put him under and try stitching it up. So, we have an extra dog in the house. The problem is that when he gets hot he pants and when he pants his canine teeth go through the slice in the tongue and that won't allow it to go back together to heal properly so he gets to be a couch baby in the air conditioning while he recovers.

Killing me.

Going to BF's house for dinner and wii tournament with some other friends! Should be fun!
