I know really, we are close enough to the mountains that we sometimes get some of the edge of the colder weather and usually get more snow and ice here than closer in to Richmond. This year has just been all over the place but I think it's been that way all over from what I hear from everyone else.

Well, Saturday I had an all day baking marathon. Man, my aching back. I did banana nut bread, a double batch of orange cranberry bread, a triple batch of coconut macaroons, a double batch of ginger cookies, a double batch of cheddar pennies (which, btw, were a total flop) and a double batch of whiskey cake. Good stuff, I got to eat some of the leftovers today. The coconut macaroons are gone and so are the ginger cookies. I guess I'll have to make some more tomorrow....:D

We got about an inch of snow saturday, gave me something pretty to look at while I was in the kitchen all day. Today I got to take a little break while Chad delivered the gift baskets for the landowners that allow him to hunt. I stayed home to work on another project. Now we are just hanging out and catching up while we watch ABC's home makeover show.

Got a call from Granny yesterday morning and it has taken a while for this to sink in. She wants to give us her doublewide when her new house is ready. I don't have anywhere to put it. Now I have to find land. I'm so stunned I don't know what to do, I feel like my head is going to explode. We love this house but her doublewide is a little bigger. If we could find a larger piece of land that would be wonderful but the logistics of it all are a bit daunting. We would have to sell this house first to buy some land and be able to move the doublewide (it's 2 1/2 hrs away) and we figure it will end up being somewhere between $10000 and $20000 just to move it, plus having to put in well and septic on a new homesite, if we can find one soon enough. I feel like my head is going to explode. Merry Christmas, here's a house :th Now what? What do you say to that? Thank you is not sufficient.

Lori could you look for a piece of land that has an existing home. Someplace with a well and septic but a home you would never want to keep. Maybe you could move Granny's place there and remove the existing structure. The place would probably be a bargain because the houses condition, but have the other stuff you will need.

We kind of did the same thing but tore down the existing house. The septic was from the 30's and had to be replaced but we still got a great piece of land for a reasonable price. A lot of people are not willing to do the work.

How exciting. Good luck.

Let me play the devil's advocate ... What if you just SOLD the double wide and socked the money into savings or a piece of land when you find one? Then when you sell your house (in your own good time) you could use the money to build. :hu

I was thinking the same thing but I thought it would be an afront to mention selling granny's gift. If it were me, this is what I would be doing. I couldn't afford to move it, so this would be my only option.....but then, I'm not Lori, either! ;)

That is what I was thinking!
I feel a gift is a gift and once it is given it is up to the receiver to do what they want with it!

Lori, how soon until her house is ready and she gives you the double wide? Do you have or know of a good realtor and banker?

A good realtor is someone who is networked within their field and is out there talking to people and a wealth of information. Most will be willing to sit down with you over coffee or lunch to try to help you. Another good source of information on property is a banker. My banker specializes in loaning money for land, farms and for people buying properties at Master Commissioner sales. They have a wealth of connections and may also be able to point you to a property that would be suitable.

As far as the expense of actually moving the home, do you have anything you could barter part of the expense with? Do you have any friends who are truckers that can give you some hints about how to reduce the expense? (Every industry has their little secrets)

Very overwhelming but very exciting too!!! Something good will absolutely come of this! :weee
