Thank God, Lori! That is just the bestest news! I am so very happy for you!
NOW...you must journal and post pics of the whole process of starting your farm, you know! So some of us smallholders and renters can live vicariously through you!
Well guys, I'm back home. Met with the movers this morning and they gave us an estimate of $9000 to move the doublewide up here. Way less than what I had expected. We are still working on the deed and we are meeting with our realtor tomorrow. We have to find someone up here to set the house and deck up when they haul it up. Too far for the movers to bring all the necessary equipment to actually set the house. We would have to put them up in a hotel for like, 3 days. Still working on getting estimates for the well/septic. I am so nervous I can't stand it. I couldn't sleep a wink last night. I kept trying to figure out what all needed to be done and count the dates and everything. Crazy. We figure that we have about 3 weeks to move the house off the property at the lake and get it up here. Don't know when we'll be able to move in it though. Permits, surveys, well, septic, driveway...the logistics of it all are daunting but hopefully it will work out alright. I'll be sure to take lots of pictures. The land is where I shot my 2 bucks this year, BTW.
Might I suggest you get the book Backyard Homestead if you don't already have it?
We have 7 acres, and we live on 2 acres of it. That 2 acres is house, play yard, garden, orchard, and chicken pens. The rest is either fenced off or being fenced off for large livestock (cattle and alpaca right now).
So, there's a lot you can do on 5 acres! whoot!!! congrats!! whoot!!!
Went to the county zoning today and found out what all we need to get to start the ball rolling. Saw the plat today and it looks like we are getting 3.5 for now with access to the rest but we will get that eventually. Looks like we will have somewhere around 10 acres of pasture, I'm guessing...money is going to be really tight until we get the house sold. It was really incredible cause you will be able to see the entire pasture from our front porch. Pretty cool. The land just gently rolls. So pretty. The kids got to see the creek and the pond today and Tyler proclaimed to his daddy that "I want a field of frogs!!!" They ran about 1/3 of the pasture and then came back and Tyler said, "whoooo that's a long way to run mommy!" I told him that he could ride his gator every day to go get the mail for me. He's really excited about that
I'm stressing about the money situation but it will be okay. Standing on that hill today I could just feel that it was where we are supposed to be.
We met with our real estate agent tonight and she thinks that we should list our house at $155,000. We owe $92000 on it now so we should be in good shape. We agreed not to put the house on the market until we move out cause she just can't show it with the kids living in it....too crazy. We also have to tone down my daughters Sleeping Beauty Pink bedroom with something more neutral . I figured that would happen.
Looks like I can plan for a bigger garden now!!! Hmmmm....how many nigerian dwarf goats can I fit on 10 acres?????
I am at a loss. We were hoping to get this thing done for under $30000 and now we are thinking it will be more like $40000. I don't know where we are going to get the money. We are supposed to get the deed to the land this week so we'll see what we can do. We are thinking that if we can borrow $10000 from my granny that will cover our mortgage payments for an entire year so that we can try to get a loan against the land to pay for all the expenses and then when we sell our house we can pay everything off and be done with it. It's just gonna be tight until we sell our house.
We are stressin...
My granny and papa couldn't believe their eyes when we showed them the expense sheet. They dug their well for $2750 and ours is going to be around $6000. Everything in this county is twice what it is in theirs. It's exasperating.
We had a pretty good weekend though. Chad's mom came up for her birthday and got to see the doublewide and granny's new house. She was very excited, she loves granny. A friend of ours also came up and got one of the old stoves out of the old tobacco barn, he collects tobacco memoribilia. He has an amazing collection....museum worthy. He has a huge metal quanset (sp?) style building that is bigger than my house just full of stuff that he has collected over his lifetime.
Madelyn decided to stay at granny's this week, I am thinking that I am going to go back up on friday if we can sign the deed papers thursday. The kids are supposed to be having a pajama party at church friday night. I was hoping to make it but I don't know, depends on what happens with the property.
I'm so frustrated with everything....we are estimating everything higher than we expect so hopefully we'll come in lower on total cost but who knows???
Got the duck pool emptied out this morning. It still needs a good scrub but the waterhose is still frozen so it will have to wait. At least I got all the water out so it doesn't freeze again. We had ice this morning and I had to break up some of the waterers a bit. Supposed to get a cold front moving through tomorrow and snow friday night and saturday morning.
Still waiting to get the deed to our land, the weather got things backed up with the surveyors and they were supposed to get it done either yesterday evening or this morning sometime. Can't sign over the deed until the survey is complete. It is driving Chad crazy.....hurry up and wait, you know? I constantly have to keep calming him down....last night I just soaked in a hot bath with epsom salts and read The Shining for an hour and a half so I could just take a mental break from it all.
I took ya'lls advice and got the Backyard Homestead and I love it! I also got a vegetarian cookbook and the new Square Foot Gardener Cookbook. I love them all! I just sit here and daydream all the time about what the barn will be like and where I will put in the garden, etc etc etc.....
Can't hurt to dream, right?
The woman from Cornerstone Farm, Barb, is sending me the plans for a new barn that she wants to build this year. They renovated an existing barn for their goats but she wants to build a new one. She has a herd of about 30 nigerian dwarfs. She is sooooooo sweet.
Here is a link to their site....this is the breeding list. http://www.cornerstonefarm.net/breedlist.html
The does we chose were Bered, Abigail, and Rhesa but we are considering Aliana and Anah II. What do you think all my goat people? Did we make good choices? I hope we get some good does from them...we are so excited!
There is a fair amount of wind today so I am doing some laundry. I needed to wash the dog blankets and some beach towels that were used during the recent rains so they are on the line. The clothes will go in the dryer, just too cold and muddy out for them. I'll be glad when it warms up, my last electric bill jumped up $50....
I posted a thread under construction projects about our barn, if anyone has any ideas please reply!!! Gonna go check on the laundry.....
