Just a warning...Some products like whole grain breads for example, can be HIGHER GI than the white breads. Sounds counter-intuitive, I know.

And this is also a YMMV thing. If you have done too much damage to your system or genetically are predestined for glucose metabolism issues, switching to whole grains (low GI) from processed grains (high GI) may not make one bit of difference.

I was a whole grain user for years. I still was obese and had high blood pressure. Only counting total carbs and staying under 50g/day did me any good.

Wow...that is interesting. How long did it take you to figure out what works for you and shed the weight?

Remember to measure too!!!

Dace, when I cut the carbs down to less than 5og/day, after about a week the weight just seemed to fall off. Like 40 lbs in less than 6 months.

that is awesome! You have been low carb for a couple years right?

My family is naturally slender, so they can keep their carbs, I am just switching them over to more complex carbs since that is healthier....more stable blood sugar and more fiber. But I also want to break the habit of living on carbs, which is what we have always done.... cereal, bagels, toast, sandwiches, quesadillas, pasta, potatoes, bread....I just want a better balance for the whole family. And for me I want to shed a few Lbs, so my carbs are even more limited.

Yeah...about 2 1/2 years. I still need to lose 20 lbs, but when you are over 40, hormones play a big part and I may never lose that last bit. I will continue to low carb forever because I know I am doing the right thing every time I take my blood pressure :D

I would rather my head didn't explode and my blood pressure goes through the roof on high carbs.

I just read the entire thread and I'm all caught up now...

You know I don't think we are eating enough veggies either. We eat tons of veggies too, but 2 lbs?? (Trying to imagine what that looks like.) Ok and they need to be served raw and cooked right?

I love cabbage salads, so I think I will make one right now. Purple cabbage and orange carrots...pretty. :)

Remember your lessons, BBH :D
A serving of most veggies is about 1/2 cup, so 4 cups of veggies or so a day.
Mmm, that cabbage with a little yogurt, ACV, sea salt & pepper. Instant coleslaw.

Thank you!! Ok 4 cups, well I think I was alright then b/c I am sure I eat 4 cups worth of veggies a day. I think I'm going to do what Dace does and write it all down here so I can keep track.

My cabbage salad was good and simple. I like your idea! I just added a slosh of (cold pressed) extra virgin olive oil and balsamic.
