Took my mom to the Dr. yesterday and of course it rained in town. All that concrete and asphalt needed some rain to grow. Nothing at her house or at ours.

It always rains out on the highway near the airport. I told hubby we need to start growing our veggies in the grassy median on the highway.

hi everyone!

ok we are THIS close to having my stupid 'puter back up and running!

and ah...a break in the weather..... sunny and cool. perfect for Mrs. D and her chicks to be out and about.

so we did have some damage from the storm... most of my corn went down so i think its a gonner. the ears were VERY small anyway. so i'm cutting it and giving it to the stupid pigs (i told them how much i hated them while i was down there). but this will be ok - it will make way for the fall garden. a lot of the pumpkins seem to be ripe (thats not the right word...) but the skins are still soft. i'm taking them up and they will either be pig wormer or i'll cook some down.

can you believe it - fall stuff? wowza.

happy friday!
ps wish me luck with this stupid computer. grrrr.......

Best of luck with the stupid computer. I feel your pain. Been there done that and then did it again. Enough symapthy?:p

Enjoy the 2 day break from the heat - next week it's back into the 90's :th
But the noise from the cicadas is positively deafening this week - early fall? They started really early this year.

BTW - I'm going to see goats on Sunday - her website is earknotacres.com, but it's under construction so there isn't alot there. She also has a couple other websites I have gleaned info from. I think it'll be a good match for me.
Hubby think we are just going to learn about them ;)

:barnie I hate that sort of thing. It's like when it rains in Seattle in the summer months, but completely misses our house. The people in Seattle generally despise the rain and man, I could really use it over my way! :p

ETA: Oh, I meant to ask you, OFG, why you are taking the pumpkins out? I don't think I understand what you said? Do you not think the pumpkins will ripen in the field or do you just need that space for the fall garden?

hey DM!

yep my pal said that it was gonna rain again! yikes!

and yep i'm taking the pumpkins out b/c the stupid squash bugs have kinda killed the plants.. and most of the pumpkins look ready. and yes, i need the space for the fall garden. i guess i'm taking the loss and if i can get them cured so i can keep them, then thats just upside.

we ran some of the ducks into the garden after we cleared it out - i'm hoping they will eat the bugs

the guineas are laying poolside and fanning themselves with palm fronds while sipping a fruity drink. i am not making THEM a pie!

and look! my puter is up! whoot! i'm checking damage/loss but so far soo good.

yay!
:)

:frow Hey OFG, have you stopped the pie marathon already? No pie for the guineas!?! Well, at least they seem to have the gumption to fan themselves with those palm fronds.

I bet the ducks are just loving their new job!

Sorry to hear about the squash bugs. We are very lucky not to have those things here. [knock on wood] I now completely understand your rationale for pulling the pumpkins early. I hope a few of them do cure up for you!

Glad your computer is running again! :)

well. a lot of ridiculous things happened yesterday.

the good news is that my puter is almost back up - just a few more things to install. what a pain!

the other good news is that i actually did a little work outside yesterday - but by the time i went over to see the good neighbors about 4pm the mommy took one look at me and said that i over did it and sent me home with a couple of cans of beans and instructions to go and lay down. seems that i'm not out of the sick-woods yet. sheesh!

the other good news is that we found our last younger BR turkey settin' hen.. she was in the garden on a nest. we've been looking for her for a week!

actually she was in a pretty good spot but but safe enough from that dang Foxy Brown. so we took her up under cover of darkness... i was thrilled b/c she was probably at least 10 days into her brood and i could tell at least 5 of the 7 eggs were live. we put her in the big turkey coop (freed up by them jakes now in the freezer, canned, or in my belly etc).

but then this morning she was on the roost, not on her eggs...and they were cold as ice. she was also screamin' her fool head off.
:-(

then i spent about an hour chasing the neighbors cow around while we were trying to get her into the trailer. it didnt go well. they wanted to take her to be bred but she wasnt having anything to do with that foolishness. F- for sure.

but on the upside..... our orchard friends gave us a TON of MORE PEACHES!!!

didya hear that lala!!? more!! free! oh heavenly peaches! and blackberries.

they also gave us an infestation of fruit flies so thats workin on my last good nerve.

the other fun news (?) is that our 2nd barred rock hen got up from her eggs...looks like she'll only have one chick. i'm calling him Neo because he is "The One." and yes i think this is hilarious. i'll probably watch The Matrix tonite just to keep the joke going. The Big Man is already tired of it.

so i'm coolin my heels inside today and i'll be workin on canning and such.

happy saturday!

I'm so jealous of the peaches! I bought enough at the farm stand yesterday to make one thin pie...$2!...but I might just make them into liqueur instead, since I am holding down the fort by myself until tomorrow and am realizing just how much my own big man does! Liqueur is quick and easy, and I can buy more to make a pie on my day off....but ooooo, I want pie, and with dh gone, I could eat it by myself and no one would be the wiser...you wouldn't tell, wouldja?

Silly turkey. Mine needs to see the inside of the freezer for the same offense.

For fruit flies, you can make a trap with a plastic narrow-neck bottle like a water or soda bottle. Cut the top third off, turn it upside down, and duct tape it to the bottom. So you have a funnel taped inside a cup. Before taping, put some water and some peach peels or a pit inside to attract the fruit flies. They will eventually all get stuck in the trap....after you are done processing all the peaches.

Hahahahaha! Neo! That is soooo funny. Yes, it's one of our favorite movies too. But only the first Matrix. The second and third were awful.

I hope you aren't sick of peaches by the time you get them all processed. :p
Sorry about the turkeys. That stinks big time.
Beautiful day here in Buckeye state. Time for me to get busy.

Goat question - are any of your poison ivy eaters registered? I'm trying to figure out how seriously to take all this registering stuff. My head is so far into the game right now and I can't slow down :p Anyway, it makes it easier to sell kids right?
I should probably check into the 4-H rules here too before we purchase to make sure all the tattoos and such are right.
There aren't any goat 4-H kids around here. Franklin county fair only had a few goats and the 2 girls I tried to speak to were rather stuck up and unfriendly. :tongue
