its another warm day and i'm heading out!

so far so good today - first nite without any lights for the poults and the meats. they both seem happier - i think they finally got a good 'rest' time in the dark and everyone was not in a heap this morning.

puppy has the poops so we are keeping an eye on her. i gave her a little pumpkin in her food this morning.

otherwise she is doing great. she is absolutely fearless... unless the big dogs start their serious barking.. then she runs to her "den" which is so adorable. yesterday she actually "ran" not "puppy hopped" so she's getting to be a big girl. our Dog#2 (who takes care of her) is so glad we got HIM a puppy - he's in heaven and doing a great job of caring for her.

and i had pie for breakfast, so why WOULDNT it be a great day!?

happy friday everyone! whoooot!

*runs outside in shorts to spend the day*

So what do you do with turkey eggs this time of year? Eat them? Hatch them? How big are they?

Hubby and I are wanting to add another meat source next year, do you like raising the turkeys? We eat a lot of turkey but they are so.....ugly.....I have not thought of having them myself. They get along with chickens and ducks, right? I wanted to get guineas but hubby thinks they will disturb the chickens (his favorites).

Have a blessed Sunday!

Well I LOVE my turkeys.

They have really interesting and fun personalities. I NEVER thought they would be as cool as the are. We just raise a few at a time for eating now. If I ever have space I will definitely be keeping a large flock of turkeys. :D

well, she's laying. they turkey hen that is - we got another egg yesterday. for now we are just taking them up.

SD - the turkey eggs are just a bit bigger than hens eggs and are speckled... the yolks are really big - so the eggs are great for baking. and someone said they were really great for deviled eggs - who knew!?!?

we are still feeding most of our egg to the pigz so they'll go in the pot with the others to be hard boiled. oddly after we got rid of those mean roos, the hens all started laying again. hummm...

anyway the pigz will be good and fat for butcher day (just a couple weeks!).

if that turkey hens builds a nest we may let her set but it would be a challenge keeping them alive this late in the season. the momma would keep them warm enough but we'd be afraid it would take its toll on her. so we'll see.

but next spring we are gonna be on a turkey RAMPAGE. my good neighbor's said the prize winning turk at the fair went for $1200!!!!! and we saw him and our Turkey Bob would have beat him hands down. so we'll give the neighbor kids a passel of poults next year and see if we can sell some too - but we need to reload our turkey stores - and not the $4 ones at the store.

i actually took a bit of time off yesterday. but i did get all my baking done - bread, scones, and some kind of jam bars - they didnt come out exactly so i'll be working on that.

had another weird visit with the MIL. on sat she showed up to see the pup - and we were glad that she ooohed and aaahed over Kai. but of course after a while the visit went down hill. she asked if i knew that dogs would look at what you pointed to. sigh. the whole time they were their i was using my hands to tell the dogs what to do.

me: yes, thats how i train my dogs - they follow my hands.
she: but did you KNOW that?
me: yes thats how i train my dogs
she: but did you KNOW that chimps cant even follow your point?
me: i dont have a chimp.
she: but if you had one it wouldnt even follow our hands
me: (blink blink. silently singing "if it has a tail then it's a monkey, if doesn't have a tail then it's an ape") um....
she: well!? well!?!? did you? did you KNOW that!?! did you KNOW that dogs will follow your point?
me: um, the dog has a tail - does that make him a monkey?
she: what?
me: exactly

they finally left. we still havent told her that kai's full name is "My Fighting Uruk-hai Poodlekiller." we think this is hilarious b/c we hate the MIL's bad poodles. she lets them bite us and says she doesnt know what to do about it. i have a couple of ideas. the last time one of them bit my pants i told her if he got me again, i'd kick him till he was dead. didnt' make for a very comfortable visit but now they try to contain the bad poodles when we show up.

anyway we stopped after church on sunday and the MIL was all weird again and her bad poodles jumped all over us.

we went to sit down but the poodles were all over the couches and barking they heads off.

MIL (screaming like a banshee and trying ineffectively to get the poodles down): ahahagghhghghhhhhh hey you dogs hey you dogs
my hubby to MIL: why dont you point to get those poodles off the couch?
me: (snorting)

we got away as soon as we could.

onward and upward, right? sheesh....
