Wow what a snow you are getting!

The leftovers I was referring to were what I scraped off the plates during clean up. Great for chickens, but not much else. We also had a tight budget for the dinners.

Gotcha! We don't have many plates to scrape at church meals. :D

The private school I worked at served breakfast, lunch and a snack in "family style". We delivered the dishes, cups, silverware, enough food and beverages for each person to the classes. Then each teacher served the meals to the children in their classrooms. The teachers had to scrape the dishes before we picked them up to take back to the kitchen for clean-up. So if the food went home, it went with the teachers. One of the teachers always saved veggies for her horses and goats.

Yea, the scraps from plates was what I was talking about, too.

We have a small church and they all know that I have chickens.

Oh, by the way, my 19 hens laid 15 eggs today.:ep That's the most ever.

I think we ended up with about 2-3 inches of snow. It's very pretty. Well, it was until the boys got their 4 wheelers in it. It's supposed to be very cold, so I think it may stick around for a couple of days.

I finished sewing my "sling" purse today. I'll post pics later. I really wished I had started sewing sooner, but better late than never.

Yes, sewing is a great hobby and can save tons of money as well.

Once you get the hang of things you can make curtains, clothes, toys, or even get started machine quilting! Really it is almost limitless - AND very self sufficient!:D

I agree with the food waste, if the schools put all the leftover food into compost bins or gave it to pigs or chickens or something like that then we would save so much from going into the landfills. But then again, there are many schools out there now that serve tater tots as their only vegetable. :tongue I am appalled at how bad the school lunch program has gotten. Kids in the city don't even know where food comes from anymore. I saw a survey that was done in a high school once and the people put out different vegetables and fruits and asked the kids to identify them and it was just pitiful. Most of them had never seen an eggplant, didn't know what cabbage or cauliflower was, avacadoes-- clueless.

Anyway, I'm so glad that you have gotten the sewing bug!!! It's fun, isn't it?

Boy do I agree with the school lunch thing!

The last district I worked for lunch was burgers and floppy greasy fries, no veg worth eating (we got boiled to death broccoli!) The kids would get SO excited when they added government commodity fruit to the plate occasionally. One of the breakfasts was called a "super doughnut" which was a vitamin fortified grease lump. We did not even have a playground to use.

The district in which I now work is amazing. Fresh fruit with every meal (breakfast and lunch), great salads with dark greens, yummy veggies, and main courses like chicken leg, chicken soft tacos and even a great meatloaf. This district actually takes the children's health to heart! We have a walking track, Walking Clubs after school and Movement breaks during the school day in addition to recess. (Children NEVER lose recess as a consequence here, they may only get to walk the track instead of free play, but they still get to move outside!)

I know now it can be done. We need to pressure more schools to do it!

OK, here is my "Sling" purse. I think this pattern would be great for a teen age girl to sling stuff in for a slumber party. It was so simple, just a 2 piece pattern, some elastic and cording.

I hope you don't get any ice, FC. There has been too much of that going around already.

I haven't had alot going on lately, except sewing. In a couple of weeks it will be time to seed peppers and some tomatoes. After that, it will crazy greenhouse time. It's pretty great to walk out of 30 weather and into a nice, balmy 65-70 temps. I think that's what I like so much about it. It's like a mini tropical vacation each time I work in it.

Homeschooling my DS is going OK. He is very on track to graduate. As for the other two, they aren't even trying. I called their mom and told her not to be suprised if they haven't caught up much. She said she would have them bring their work home. They are never home, they are here. Which, is fine with me so at least I know they can get a homecooked hot meal. Since her and her husband are seperated, she is pretty much raising them over the phone.

I figured they wouldn't come today because our county schools are out due to snow. So, I sent their books home with them. We'll see tomorrow how much, if anything, they got done.

My chickens (19) must really like snow, because I got another 15 eggs today. Everyone is getting cranked up now.

The weather is supposed to be sunny, but a high only around 30 for the next couple of days. Then Saturday & Sunday - around 60. That's the weather for you here in the south; if you don't like it, wait a couple of days.

What a beautiful couple of days we have had. Saturday was about 65 and today was sunny and 71. Tomorrow is supposed to be warm as well with rain moving in Tuesday evening.

Friday, we finally had to get a technician to come look at the washer. DH has been tinkering with it for about 3 weeks. He did nothing but reconnect all the connectors and said that the tech from Whirlpool he talked to suggested the mother board may have to be replaced. That service call was $95. Geesh!!

Saturday, my DH took me out for a little shopping for my birthday (Feb.10th). I bought some more fabric from Hobby Lobby. Went to Goodwill for 1/2 off day and bought 10 asst. sheets for less than $15. I'm planning on making pajama pants from some of them. Got one pair for my DS pinned and ready to stitch.

My greenhouse is in, but we are waiting on the rest of the seeds to come in so we'll just have to make one trip. We are still prepping the site for it anyway.

My 19 chickens have laid 4 1/2 dozen eggs in the past 5 days. Woo-hoo, lots of omlets, deviled eggs and egg salad in my future.

Today after church, my SIL had us over for my birthday. Kind of funny, everything was processed and store bought - pizza and chocolate cake. But, that's OK. They don't share our ideas of SS. Got some good spending money, though.
