This morning on Craigslist I found an ad asking for the removal of a barn and a double corn crib. I was drooling over the thought of all the lumber DH and I would have if we tore down that barn! Even talked about pulling together our friends to help with the disassembly and share the wealth of lumber with them.

Emailed the guy, heard back, called him on the phone....we won't be getting the barn.

DH and I would want to take the pieces apart carefully, salvage as much as we could, as the barn is hand hewn and put together with wooden nails. We were hoping the gentlemen would be lenient a bit with the time frame (as in 2-3 weeks to disassemble and remove). He has an offer from someone who's closer to him who can start the job next week (which is when we would have been able to do it, too) and they said they would have it out in 1 week, at the most 2. I couldn't definitely say I could do that.

So we passed up on this beautiful old barn. :( I just hate it when a good deal comes along and you can't take it.

On the other hand, it would have cost us dearly in gas and time to go and get it, so I'm sure it's for the best anyway. I just love old barns, though.

Last night we went to Becky's (BeccaOh here) and picked up a pair of guineas she had for us. They are pretty loud. They are in my coop area for now, and have spent all morning screeching at us everytime we walk buy.

Becky showed us her new outbuilding and how she had her runs fixed up. She used a pallet topper for a gate, and we thought it was such a neat idea! She is so generous, too, as she sent 4 pallet toppers to use as gates home with us, plus an old garden gate that she wasn't using! Becky is the one who got me started on using pallets for things, and she is the one who gave us the idea for the A-Frame from pallets, we just revised it our way. :)

We had a little bit of rain last night, but just a few passing 5 minute showers. I'm ready for a good down pour! My rain barrels are empty.

Today we are planning to build a day time pen for my ducklings. I think they need to be separated out from my chicks during the day. For one, they go through sooooo much more water than the chicks, and if I put them in their own day pen, I can put their own little pool for water in with them without having the worry of a chick drowning.

I did email the woman back about the Alpacas. I told her as much as it pains me to do so, I would have to pass at this time. I realize her Alpacas are insanely cheap right now, but the timing just isn't right. She was very understanding and told me to let her know if anything changes on our end. I don't see that happening, but who knows? :hu

For now, Alpacas are still just a dream. ;)

We got a downpour with thunder and lightening which started yesterday afternoon. It was drizzling this morning, but now the rain has stopped. It wasn't enough.

Sorry about the barn.
ETA: A fella we knew used to get a group of 30 or 40 together from church - mostly young adults and/or high school kids - and they would take apart an old barn in what seemed like no time. He started with two or three adults that had experience and they taught the young ones how to properly dismantle the barns. Quite something to watch, and imo, whoever is taking this one must have a large crew to do it so quickly.

Once again, I am tired just reading your journal...... :D

DH wants ducks too....do you keep yours in pens all the time or do you let them free range on the property?

I give them free range time, but not all the time. The geese free range all the time, the ducks free range about 3 times a week. It's too much poop in my yard if I let them out 24/7 ;)

Quail, what else have you built with your pallet wood?? I saw the pics of your little coops they were great. Is there a web site somewhere with pallet ideas?? I guess I can google it. We have about 10 pallets in my driveway and there are always a ton on CraigsList. I wish I could think of something to use them for.

My mom told me about some people she knew that made fence out of their pallets. I am not sure if they used toppers, or tore pallets apart or what, but they fenced their yard in using pallets.

Hey, I'm thinking about making a pallet fence for my front yard. I saw one that looked like one of the really nice picket styled fences online.

Ya'll remember a few weeks ago when I got 4 free rabbits with their 8 foot cage? I posted a pic of it somewhere a few pages back...

Anyway, I had promised the people some chicks in return, because they are wanting to get into chickens. Well, you know me, happy to enable the addiction, working towards a backyard flock in every backyard!

Well, they are coming tomorrow to get their chicks. I'm also giving them 3 adult BO's. I was originally going to sell Pocket and his two ladies, but I felt this family deserved them! They are really excited to get their new chickens.

So during our conversation they asked if we could use a dog box. We asked them how much and I asked what kind of shape is it in, etc....Here her husband built it by hand, even shingled the roof! and is giving it to me FREE!!!!!!!! He makes these dog boxes and usually sells them for $35-$40 each.

This dog box is going to be my new duck shed for my ducklings day pen!! I'm so excited!!

We are finally getting a good down pouring of rain! The clouds just burst loose with torrents of rain. I'm so thankful!!

We recently had someone come take down our driveshed, all beautiful old barnboard...Those people who got the barn you're talking about will do what the guys did to our driveshed...saw all the old boards off, take out the supporting and important beams, then pull it over with a tractor and it'll colapse in on itself..There are quite a few hand hewn large timbers left from our driveshed that the barn removal guys didn't want.
