Cold is on the Right, Hot is on The Left
I sent some chickies and a trio of adult Buff Orps to their new home today. Their new family was quite thrilled with them!
They brought me the promised dog box, and I'm thrilled with it! It's a recycled shipping crate!!!!!!! The husband gets the crates from work, does some tweaking to them, adds a roof with shingles, and viola! Dog house! Or in my case, Duck Shed!!!!!!!!!
It's just perfect for my group of ducklings!!!
I asked DH if he felt this box would have been worth his asking price if we had paid for it. DH said absolutely, especially if you consider the cost of buying the shingles and plywood that he used for the roof and his time that he put into it. I've seen handmade/homemade or even plastic dog boxes sell for A LOT more than what he charges for his boxes!
Course, it's a good business ploy Give a box away, they tell all their friends who have dogs/ducks/chickens...etc.
We spent a looong time discussing how he could re-vamp these boxes into small chicken coops for either bantams or for 2-3 laying hens! :lol
I won't be getting my little duck pen done this weekend. We need to pick up some more wire first. I am super excited! We are going to paint the box to match the T-1-11 I bought for my "fancy" coop.
We've chosen a spot next to DH's mini barn for my duckling's pen. It will have both a shady area and an area that is in full sun. This way, the ducklings can get out of the sun if they want to, or can take a nice warm sun bath. I plan to find a small kiddie pool (either used or from the dollar store) and set it inside the pen so they can have their own little "pond".
I'll be borrowing Becky's gate idea, and using a pallet topper for the gate into their run area. They will have full access to grass and bugs, and not have to share food/water with any chickens!!!!
I can already see how my duck pen is going to look! Now to just get it done (hopefully by next weekend!) and see how my ducklings like it!!
