When I open the brooder lid the turkeys try to fly out. There not so dumb, I think they really want to get away from the stinky meat birds. :sick

Well excitement on the homestead. :somad :rant

Son was sick AGAIN last week. Sore throat, green snotty nose, headache, no appetite, and a low fever. By yesterday he was ok. We went to MIL for BIL b day. I asked BIL how he was doing. He said just ok. HE had Mono. :barnie

So today when DS came home from school covered in a rash. Bumpy red head to toe I googled his symptoms. Fever, snot, rash... Guess what came up???

Mono!!! I can't believe it. :he

Why is it that some families are aways sick and passing it to us? Don't you think that maybe last Fri when we went bowling she should of told me the issues her family had?

Ds is going to doctors in the morning.

And I have a swollen gland. :th

Morning Gina!

You mentioned planting potatoes recently, I have been thinking about trying some sweet potatoes.

I was thinking that they were a cooler season veg though. Is it still planting time for spuds? Is growing sweet pots different that regular spuds?

Thanks!

Here in NC where sweet potatoes is a major crop, they are usually grown as rooted sprouts removed from the seed potatoes, Irish potatoes are usually grown from small seed potatoes or larger potatoes cut so there ia an active eye in each portion. I don't know if they are putting me on or not but they claim that if you remove a sprout properly from a sweet Potatoe another sprout will start from the same eye, which greatly cuts down on the number of potatoes needed for seed. I have never been in a sprouting house but have planted the rooted sprouts with good results. I gave them up to concentrate on rarer veggies which aren't all that available. Did the same with tomatoes, summer squash, and collard greens which tend to overproduce and people end up giving away.

Good grief Tanks! How's DS doing now?

I absolutely agree they should have "disclosed" the mono to you - especially if your son was already sick w/a cold!

You do use different methods for growing sweet vs regular potatoes. For sweet potatoes you plant the slips and let em go. For regular potatoes as they grow you add more dirt around the plant and mound around the plant to increase the yield.

I am growing both this year.

Good morning all.

Sorry I have not been back. Kinda just in reading mode.

DS is doing really well. I took him to the doc on what was it Tues?? The rash and sore throat turned out to be strep. I imagine the lesser of two evils. I will take strep over Mono any day. I asked the doc to check for Mono anyways because I wanted to be sure. They did both test. The "does he have it now" as well as the antibodies test. Results came back yesterday. No mono currently. His blood work showed he does carry the antibody which means he was exposed at some time but not in the last 6 months.

SIL took her boy to doc day before yesterday. His doc checking for mono. He has the sore throat but they didn't check for strep. Not sure why but whatever.

Dace, good luck with those sweet potatoes. I tried planting once. I had an ok crop. Let me know how it works for you.

So let's see....

Friday April 15. Tax day???

I got my state and federal both back this week so I am happy.

Spent yesterday getting the stinky meats and turkey poults set up outside. I went on craigslist and found a free wood crate. I was thinking for a bigger brooder. But is was way to big for my laundry room. So I ended up putting in in the chicken tractor. Kinda redundant I know. But this way they are outside, smell :sick, but still contained and kept warm. The space is a couple square ft bigger which should hold them for another week. Then I think I will pull the brooder and leave them on ground.

They survived last night. I am a bit haggard. I woke up at least 3 times. One time a big pack of coyotes was yipping its way across the valley. When I went to bed dh asked me if I was ready to defend the birds. Uhhh I can't use the rifle here in suburbia. I don't have a hatchet handy(OFG style), I don't even keep a broom in my laundry. I think I am going to get ds BB gun out just in case. Maybe park a shovel by the back door. :idunno

Lots to do around the house this weekend. I'm way behind on laundry. I really need some more horse poop. Planning to clean the family room carpet.

It never ends.

Sunday they are having an Easter egg hunt at MIL house. Must make an appearance to that.

So I have broodys coming out my ears. Yesterday I had two Turkey hens in one nest box. Usually there is a Buff Orp on the eggs and a turkey on her. I didn't check to see if the buff was under the turkey hens. Poor girl. I think today I am going to move eggs and broody chicken, not turkey, down to my lower coop. I will close her in with eggs for a couple days to encourage her to stay broody. Then open attached run later. I need to separate her and the eggs from Tom. I don't want any issues with him this time.

Well I hope to get some time in the garden. Not much to d other than pull a few weeds. Everything is going on it's own and I am out of space to plant. Ooooooo.... That crate I got for the brooder would have worked as a great planting box. Maybe I should look for more.

Well I guess I should get moving. I took pics yesterday I will try to post some.

Have a great day.
