Give those taters a week, and cover them up, leave a couple inches of green above, water, and push the harvest time. :weee

Now, last year I had such bad luck with carrots.

So I used your idea of a raised bed this year for my carrots. I promise to take some pics of what you taught me.

I will take them and post them tomorrow.

Well G, I guess we meet in full circle, friends who teach each other because we can.

I was curious about those Loquats too. What do they taste like? Something like Calquats I'm thinking?

Very nice looking garden G!
I have really been dragging my feet on getting mine started this year...well truthfully, haven't really had the cash to get together the raised bed materials and mass soil amendments I will be needing here.

Your pics do make me want to get out there and get planting!

I have garden envy! I just got all of my stuff planted and I was so excited to see some stuff sprouting this morning. Your beds look amazing! Those carrots look wonderful, hope mine look that good when they come in!

Thanks guys. I love to putter around out there. Once everything is I though I kinda go stir crazy. The anticipation kills me.

Thanks peddler, I can't believe I taught you something about gardening. You know I have all kinds of friends asking me stuff now a days. I just tell them it's easy, you put down a bag of mulch and stick some seeds in it. That's all I do.

Dace, you have a ton going on. Starting your garden this early is not really necessary. Take your time. With our weather it's a year round thing anyways. You'll get to it. How are the ducks???

Amos--I have no idea what a calquat is... A loquat depending on its ripeness taste kinda sweet/citrus. I have no idea how to describe it.

Mon May 4th.

My dd and I started a broody experiment. Gathered yesterdays dozen, numbered them and put back in one nesting box. We will see how it goes. Last time I did this an egg exploded on me. Uggg, I can still taste the smell.

Mondays are kinda slow for me, I like to get the kids off to school and regroup a bit. Figure out what I need to accomplish for the week etc... At least I try to keep them this way.

I have a ton of laundry to catch up on. We had a toilet overflow yesterday. Yes I know TMI.

My pup is doing well. I have him crate trained to sleep at night. We tell him to go to bed and he walks right in. It helps the crate is next to my bed though. He usually stirs around 5:30 and I take him out back to do his business. Hes growing so fast. At his last check up he went from 17 to 27 lbs in 3 weeks. Next Fri I guarantee he will be close to 40lb's.

Well I need to get moving. Have a nice day. :)

Gina, the ducks are ok...I am not nearly as fond of them as I am my chickens.

When I was a kid we had mallards, they had such different personalities than these campbells. My mallards would follow us around and were always very friendly and inquisitive. Campbells are much more skitterish. They are also more demanding than the chickens, when they want something they let you know. :barnie the chickens seem a bit more self sufficient.

I told Dh that the ducks may have to go....

Oh well nothing to new around here. the kids have just a few weeks of school left then there home full time. Ugggg!!! I need to think of an out door project. If we are not going out of town on any vacations now may be the time to bring home some type of animal on the hoof. Goat maybe... I will have to think about this.

Garden is coming along great. I got a cast iron tub out of my neighbors orchard. Gave it to my girls to use as a flower pot. I didn't want to give up any veggie space, so I found them their own big pot. I planted 6 different types of tomatoes. The Roma's are looking weird. Big thick heavy leaves. That are looking dry and curling. Maybe I'll water them some extra. Potatoes, peppers, green beans, zucs all doing well.

I gave in and picked some carrots tonight. I can see next year I will have to plant a whole bed solely in carrots. Depending on the type I will need about two dozen per diner. These I picked tonight are called "short and sweet" . I guess that why I needed so many. Hey what do yo do with carrot tops??? Can you eat them? Should I just give them to the rabbit and hens???

My chickens are looking a bit off. I thought they were molting but their feathers are almost all gone. Their bottoms are red and bare. Not normal. I went and bought some DE at the feed store. I sprinkled in their favorite dusting spots as well as in the nesting boxes. Just in case it's some mite they picked up in the orchard. I also bought some oyster shell. I have never had to supplement this before. A friend told me if they are deficient in calcium they may peck each others feathers. So I am trying to fix it from both ends. Literally!!

good news from our old insurance co. We had to pay about 10k in bills after dh cancer surgery. We ended up paying for his denture/prosthetic. they said it was cosmetic. Not the case. It is actually considered reconstruction.. Anyways the said if we resubmit the billing with the correct codes they will reimburse us. I will be glad to clear that debt.

Well, diner on the stove and kids running crazy. Have a great night. :D

Okay, so your taters are doing their thing now. I swear and promise to take some pics tomorrow. My one basket is almost 12 inches high now in the center, pics and rulers say many words.

Your basket looks fine, I'd wait a few more days to add ore compost/straw. Let the tops get bigger leaves, and grow more.

I thought I got the raised carrot box idea from you, I have never grown carrots before. Well any that were bigger than a Mike and Ike candy.

SO I made a raised bed with plenty of sand, and I do have wee little carrot tops coming up. :weee

Ahhhh . . . you live in CA. That's why you have green peppers already. The carrots look great - one of my favorite veggies.

Yep, your bunnies should love the tops.
