Thanks, I guess I need to track down Free and see what she thinks about the weights. I would like to load it up today. I was thinking maybe if I just soak the disc in water before I use them. That way they would not soak up so much brine. Who knows.

Just went out and put up some plastic net fencing. I am taking a break. It's getting hot here. That and I need to make the family lunch. :p

Gina, the crock and bowl are gorgeous! I love the colors.

Haven't a clue about the weights - it seems like they would absorb liquid, wouldn't they? or not? have you put them in water just to see? I'm thinking they would be like a terra cotta pot. It sure couldn't hurt to oil them.

good luck on the sauerkraut, I'm going to try making some next weekend with the last of the cabbages in the garden.

I may be wrong on this but I wouldn't oil them. You don't want mineral oil in your food. The mineral oil on the wood is so that the wood doesn't crack. And I am no longer impressed by the way many Amish do things nowadays....just do a google search on Amish recipes. Typical American junk food made at home. Don't get me wrong, I admire the lifestyle in many ways but the modern world has more than crept into the way many of them do things now.

Those look great! I would say that at $20, you stole them! Quick order some more before he raises his prices ;) I love the color of glazes too!

I keep walking by the crock, and the words "cookie jar" just keep flashing through my head. :barnie I guess I will need to keep it full of fermenting foods. Or maybe buy another!!! :D Actually the crock itself was 20 the bowl was another 15.

But still I think I got a great deal.

Heck, I think you could buy a bunch for $20 each and sell 'em to all of us for $25 each plus shipping! ;)

20 bucks is a steal. Those things sell for 50 to 75 dollars (that size) around here. Bigger ones are even more. And you sure can't get one for that price out of Lehmans catalog.

If you use the weights and they soak up liquid and smell, just know that if you don't want to use them in the future you can always use a saucer and rock. My wood weights that came with my crock (ordered from Lehmans and more than 20 bucks) are still in the box. I use the saucer and rock.

And BTW - love the colors on your bowl and crock.
