Well, I know how everyone on here feels about plastic, but couldn't you put the weights inside a plastic bag and it would serve it's purpose without soaking up the brine?

An outside the box thought.

??? Wax coat them. Warm them up maybe in an oven then dip them into hot melted paraffin wax like the use on jelly. (be sure to use a double boiler to melt the wax) ????

BTW I LOVE both the crock and the bowl!!!

Hen... I did mention to him that I may have some friends interested in buying them. I would never mark up the price. I would be more than happy to do the leg work for all of you. Not sure about shipping though. Heavy and fragile.... :idunno

2dream, know I almost fell over when he told me 20 dollars. I have been drooling over the Lehman's catalogue for years. I put 3 heads of cabbage in this morning and it was only 2/3 full. He even made me 3 sets of weights.

FF wax is an interesting idea. I did rinsed them with hot water first. They seemed to just darken up a bit.

I am just wondering if when I order some for you all. ;) We should have him glaze the weights. But how do you glaze something with no bottom?

I loaded that bad boy up this morning. I used the disc with the largest circumference. It's working like a dream. At least a full inch of brine over the cabbage. I did forget to save a couple full leaves though. So I have a couple floaters. No biggy though. I have never had any issues with scum or mold. The 3 days just goes to fast.

The funny thing about the colors. My kitchen curtains are the exact same yellow and green. In tiny little vertical pinstripes. I guess I will need to finish the table cloth and put my fruit bowl right in the middle.

:D

Credit card fraud!!! :barnie Lovely. When it rains it pours. :he I got a call this morning. Someone is making lovely expensive and cheap charges around the world with my Visa. Yeah I would love to be shopping in Paris Fr. but unfortunately it was not me. To bad they chose someone who was almost already maxed. The last one got declined this morning.

Waiting on my fraud fax. Grrrrrr....... Visa is cancelled.

Now I know why I don't trust many people. One more reason to use cash only.

I work at a major financial institution. If it is a Visa card it has a 0 liability for fraud. You might consider putting a fraud alert on your credit report, just call any one of the 3 major reporting agencies and ask them to put an alert -they will notify the other 2 (Equifax, Transunion, Experian).
Usually what happens in a case where the physical card is not missing but the number is being used - they "skim" the info from the magnetic strip or via entry online. Sometimes it is just an individual (think waitstaff at restaurant or gas station attendant) who takes a cell photo or jots down info. They then manufacture a magnetic strip.
They can stick the new strip to an old card or make a new one (why you should always destroy even expired / closed credit cards). Then they sell "bundles" online - even have packages called "Premium" etc that guarantee certain credit limits and certain amount $ used before fraud is suspected by the issuing credit card company.

Thanks, good to know. I have already filed fraud stuff with my Credit union and the card was closed within 5 minutes of me finding out. I don't think I will get another. Such a pain.

We used to know a place where we could get "seconds" unglazed dinner plates (used to be a hobby of "painting" these unglazed stoneware plates. and then overglazing and fired again. "seconds" had minor chips on the edges. before I wander off again these were a perfect fit to the inside of our crocks so that is what we would use. I suppose if you were a bug nut you could sterilize with steam. oven or even bleach. We didn't and I suspect those plates with the right bacteria already in the pores were the reason That I had never heard of using whey as a starter our starters were built into the plate - weights that we used.

Mot really. If they steal your cash it is gone. If they steal a credit card or even just the number you call up the people that issued the card and disallow any charges.
