Yesterday DH and I went and picked up a used wood stove to replace the one we have been using to heat our house for the past 9 years...cost $400.
I hope to sell our well used one to someone that needs one for a garage or camp for $150. A new stove like the one we bought used would have cost us about $1500 or more so I am relieved that we found this one used.

On the way home from picking up the stove, we drove by a pile of FREE stuff in someones front yard. I had DH turn around and go back because I saw something I have been looking for all fall. . . free shingles. I priced bundles of shingles at Home Depot and a bundle cost $28. I needed about 4 bundles to shingle the shed addition to my chicken coop that DH built this fall. There were 16 bundles of 25 year shingles with all the free stuff. We picked up 5 bundles (didn't want to be greedy). What a find!

I made bread for the week, with bread being so expensive and us getting through it so fast, I decided to bake, and it turned out great, plus it was like a 1/3 of the cost :D

Scavenged mushy pumpkins from friends and family to supplement the chicken's diet :)

Harvested wild sumac berry pods to make pretty Christmas baskets and wreaths for my decorations this year. The porch basket turned out beautiful and I even stuck in some berries from shrubs (that I stole) in front of a church....where I had went for a funeral, no less!!! :D

Is stealing church-berries money saving or just a felony? Not sure.... :idunno

A while back, we got a box of pears and apples from relatives. Dehydrated the pears and sauced the apples before they went bad.

Also finally chopped into some old green pumkin/squash. It turns out they're ripe! So, I'll have about 100 lb more of pumpkin to cook with than I had anticipated :)

I was considering making our own bread but the cost of WW flour went up big time. Then we found ww bread (w'out HFCS) at the store called"Big Lots" for $1.20/loaf. That is cheap! So we stock up when we go and my homemade is still in my mind waiting for the price of flour to drop.

If you can grind your own wheat it is really a whole lot cheaper & then you get true 100% whole wheat bread.

krjwaj--that's awesome! I'd really like to sit down and work out the true cost of homemade bread. It's just a bit complicated with often so many ingredients and changing costs. There's a wholesale store for a bakery near my parents where you can get really good, whole-grain, no-junk bread for $1-2/loaf (depending on the day). We have them stock up on about 12 loaves at a time for us to get us through the school year (sandwiches just seem to work better on store-bought bread!)

Saved money today by swapping pullet eggs with a family who grinds their own wheat and corn. Got wheat flour, cracked wheat and corn flour. Yay!
