Another mistake is not adding up the things I already do to be SS and giving myself credit for it. Satisfaction in what I've already accomplished
BBH, that is so true. We should all give ourselves lots of pats on the back. Hmm, I wonder if there's a smiley for that somewhere.......

Let's see..

Hatching out 57 Coturnix Quail and not making sure the cord suspending the heat lamp was completely secure.. It slid down a few inches and roasted 7 baby quail underneath it. It broke my heart. Because we planned to eat them, but the thought of them dying that way just killed me.

Not mulching vegetable gardens in the past. We will be mulching this year.

Not spraying, pruning, and tending to fruit trees in the past. All have been done this year.

Trusting a hen with 4 peafowl eggs. I cried and cried and cried. She took them up to the 3rd week and then ate them.

I have a horrible habit of overwhelming myself. The story of my life, this one I'll never learn. NEVER! *buahahaha*

Oh yeah, the most recent lesson learned. Don't buy a lb of worms, throw them in a fresh barrel of rabbit poo and then leave them outside in the yard when you get a hard frost. Worm project #2 coming soon.

Let me think...mistakes, MISTAKES..no never a mistake be lots or errors in judgement..

1. not having raised beds-taking care of that-as I tyoe DS in filling two with soil.

2.not planning our pens and pasture a little better, hope to do something about that this year.

3.not raising my own chickens before last year, as of now.we will have more layers and even some to process.

4. not getting a milk goat before now,but I look forward to cheese I have made.

Most of my life I have been SS with all things in the house, recyle re-use and have always been into having plenty of supplies on hand.
doing what I can with what we have.

My biggest mistakes have turned out to be some great blessings.

I was just about to have given up on myself and what everyone called my "old fashioned" ways that consisted mostly of making alot of foods from scratch, canning, serious gardening, being suspicious of the gvt & food industry and knowing this country was headed for trouble.
Last year I had sold all my canning equipment and was getting ready to just go the easy route & buy everything convenience. To heck with all that work since my family didn't seem to notice (or care)the difference from home made or store bought. I thought I was the only one left that ever did these things. Oh sure I knew a few people that would have a small veggie garden, but more for the novelty of it than to try to feed their families beyond a meal or two. I on the other hand try to grow everything we would eat without having to buy much. I didn't know anyone anymore that actually canned. These both have been my passion for many years.

For some reason,(my last hoorah before going cheap & easy? :p ) spur of the moment I got a few chickens. Then of course I realized all my "in theory" know-how really meant I didn't know squat about fowl so I found BYC. Then a step further and I found TEG & SS and found out I'm NOT alone :celebrate and I'm not as smart or SS as I thought.
Everyone here has inspired me (more like lit a fire under my butt :D ) to keep it up and to learn more and I want to thank you all for that--even if you didn't realize it.

i think the biggest mistake i made was not just going for it. i think i nillynallied around about some things - chickens, goats etc. i wish i would have done some of these things sooner and not been caught up in over-researching the 'how to's'....and i especially wish i hadnt listened to all the nay-sayers who stood around telling me why and how i couldnt do something.

now they have the stand around and watch me do it...and NOT see how all their prophesied catastrophes didnt happen.

i also should have realized that chickens are like crack and that i should have built a bigger hen house.

OF, about that chicken addiction you have going-

do you know of a good 12 step program, so I can get off the chicken crack too? lol

I believe the sayings should be not that you can never be too thin, or to rich, but that you can never have too many chickens.;)

I have been cut-off, DH says "NO MORE CHICKENS'--do you think he could be serious?

I mean I only have 28, not as many as some but more than other.

Is it a bad sign if you don't know how many chickens you have?

We want to order 75 heavy breed cockerels, but the special in the catalog makes it a dollar cheaper to order a hundred. Uh-oh.
