See why we love you abi? Who else would have thought of a "nieceless pound"? I think Wifey is verrrry lucky you found her.

I love how you described this.

Yes, my little sister (IRL) refuses to find a descent husband, get married and pop out nieces for me so Abi and her adopted niece Leeanna fill that role.

Can't rely on those silly blood relatives....shessh!!

Just so you know, having read this thread came in handy today! I have an autistic student at the HS. He had a rough day today. His one on one tutor has been out ill off and on for two weeks. They did get a very kind and apparently competent sub who has been in consistently while the other tutor is out. The student still struggled to keep it together today, more than I've ever seen. His latest "thing" is to run into the hallway, jump up and clap his hands and shriek at the top of his lungs. No one has been able to figure out the trigger. It seems to me to be some sort of stress release for him. I get frustrated with the people in his classroom, meaning the adults who are paid to work in there. The head teacher is very popular with students and staff and there are frequent visitors popping in and out to chat. The other students' paraprofessionals are all very social, chatty women. There's always chatter going on. There's typically a cd playing or this week, a Christmas dvd playing. I work with 3 of the boys in the room. None of them can actually work in there. I can't stay focused. I get twitchy and jumpy. Anyway, the first student I was talking about went out in the hallway this afternoon, banged on some lockers, which he'd also been doing earlier in the day, and unfortunately there was a female student standing at the lockers where he started pounding and he hit her numerous times. The adults were out there immediately and got him to stop. The girl got herself out of the way and stayed fairly calm. The teacher talked to her and made sure she realized she wasn't being attacked. The student was made to apologize to her and taken to a quiet room to sit and settle down. Security was notified just in case a parent calls to complain. The head of security happened to come question the adult witnesses while I was with the student. They all seem to be certain he wasn't hitting the girl, he was hitting the locker. She just happened to be there. I'm thinking she was just part of the landscape at the time. Not okay, but that's where he's coming from.
He's another one who imitates noises. He absolutely can not control the impulse to do it. Sadly, we have a group of students who had been at the alternative school that was shut down and they were moved to the HS. They are supposed to be in one certain wing but are notorious for sneaking out and roaming the halls. One of their favorite "sports" is to hide around the corner from this classroom and "call" to the student with odd noises making him call back in imitation. Makes me want to smack their heads together sometimes. No matter how many times the student is told that he is not to imitate the noises and he agrees and says he understands, he still does it. He can't NOT do it.
He's one of a few kiddos that I wish communicated a little better so I converse with him at least a little. He has really poor articulation, a high pitched voice and is quite delayed. The other autistic boy in the class is even more autistic (which I realize is probably not the right way to phrase that but I don't know how else....) but he gets some stuff out once in a while and you realize that there's a lot more going on in his brain than he is able to let the outside world now about.
Just reading this thread helps me understand where these guys, and my other, more indepent autistic students are coming from and most importantly, how they see me. If that makes sense? Some can see me as a teacher type adult. One boy knows my name, connects me to a certain room, "speech" and certain activities that we do repeatedly. But I don't know "what" I am to him. Human? Not honestly sure. Most of the time he is so deep into his own head I'm not sure he realizes that he is human and so are other people. It can be so frustrating trying to figure it all out and know how to help these students communicate.
Sorry Abi, it was a long day and it was on my mind..... I really do care about these kids and want to do right by them. :/

That's awesome Henrietta :)

I can't believe they'd leave a special ed room so over stimulating >.>

That's terrible. Holidays are rambunctious enough lol.

My voice used to be higher pitched. I trained it down. I trained it into modulation. It's really hard but I didn't want to sound naggy. LOL.

alcohol with peanut butter - hmmm, vodka goes good with anything ;) it's my poison of choice... seriously, maybe a chocolate liquor or a coffee flavored one?

And Hen - :hugs YOU are my hero! Thank you so much for what you do :bow And like Abi, I can't believe a cd is kept playing all the time - my son (very high-functioning) would be wigging/overstimming like crazy with that while he's supposed to be accomplishing work.

Abi, enjoy (as much as you can) your time with your Dad and family :) I look forward to reading your account of what happens!

I hadn't thought as much about spiking the peanut butter... Maybe caramel bailey's there... and a mint liquer for the ganache.
