Nope.

I only grew 10 pounds of grain total ... but now I can say I did that too, and it was fun. I would have tried again after the first time, but about that time I found out I am Celiac. :/

Good for you, DD! I bet it wasn't as bad as you thought it would be. I wish I had the room for some meaties, but I guess rabbits will just have to do.

No, it wasn't. And, I'll do it again. Right now, I'm hoping to collect some eggs to put in my incubator so I can try and hatch some out. First time was a flop-I got nothing! And, now the girls aren't laying that well-I've gotten 2 eggs this week. Maybe I need to threaten them w/the stew pot?

And, I'm one step closer to being self sufficient! I can now grow a garden, as well as freeze and can. I can catch a fish, clean it and cook it. And, I can kill a chicken! I had hoped to grow some grain this year, but it just didn't happen. Hopefully, next year.

Of course I know, I'll never be 100% self sufficient, I can't grow my own chocolate for instance, but y'all know what I mean.
You could plant winter wheat this year. Plant in September so that the seeds have time to germinate and grow a bit before winter frosts set in. Harvest in July or August. Then you could plant buckwheat to use as a green manure in the spring to improve the soil and use it for veg garden space. You don't even need a large area. TR and I planted a 30 x 30 foot area on our two acres once.

ETA: I see Farmfresh did the same thing! :D

Good for you DD! Just think, you're so excited for when you stop working, but you'll have so many other projects and things to do it'll be like you never stopped working!

Sounds like a productive day overall. I hate when things don't go as I planned either or when I don't have time to finish projects I started. I'm glad you got the chickens done, let me know how the gutting goes. Will you be soaking the chickens in a brine? I think I've heard of others doing that but is it necessary?

I don't plan on soaking them, just gutting them. I've had no luck w/getting more chicks this year. Not one of the eggs I had in the incubator hatched. And, my girls aren't really laying right now. So far this week, I've gotten 3 eggs! :barnie And, I'm wanting to try it again next week, so we'll see if they lay more. I'm also seriously thinking of seeing if I can find a dozen straight run chicks. I need more hens, and I can eat the boys. :D

In other news, it's all WBFs fault! I was working on weeding the fence line some more. I was making good time, and figured I'd have the one field all done today. Then I noticed it-a broken fence post. It was leaning, but not down. I really wasn't in the mood for doing a fence post, so I figured I'd tell my boss when I was done working so we could do it first thing in the morning. I get down several more posts and realize the top fence board is broken. Plus, just 2 posts down, another fence post is broken. There was just no way I could leave all that. :hit So, I called my boss and told her. By the time we were done fixing the fence and I was able to leave, it was after 1:00. So, I got back just over an hour of what I lost yesterday. And, the reason it's WBF's fault is because she posted in her journal that I was probably out chasing a horse w/a fence post. Only problem being, that meant that other than feeding animals and bagging feed, I got nothing done at the farm today. I was late getting there, so I couldn't do anything other than feed B4 I went to work. But, at least I don't have to feed the boys anymore, so that helps.
