We have the endangered Gopher Tortoise here. We had one in our pasture for years and years but my dogs found him last summer. I saw a gopher in my neighbors goat pasture trying to get through the fence

This link has a pic of the hole they make

That's about the right size, but there's no way they'd survive up here in New England.
I emailed my brother about his camera. He's probably got it hidden out in the woods on the other side of the state where he hikes/camps in the wilderness (such as it is in CT). Hopefully he plans on checking on it soon and can retrieve it to bring it here. I'll do a little research in the meantime to see what it might be in this area.

Just because you don't see a ground hog doesn't mean you don't have one. I had at least one in my garden last year, have holes in my green house and in the shed where we keep the motorcycles, but I've never seen it. And, it'd better HOPE I never do see it! And, it could be a ground hog. You can find them as far north as Alaska!

That's true, he could be living there and eating out of someone else's garden who doesn't have three dogs peeing around the property. We don't even get deer in our yard even though the woods around us are full of them. In 21 years I've seen exactly 1 deer in our backyard. Around the corner? Hundreds over the years! So I know they're out there.

So I'm finding it could be woodchuck, opossum, fox or skunk. It may have been originally dug by one species, abandoned and taken over by another. DH says he knew about one of the holes a few years ago when he was dumping leaves out there. Hmmmm.....
don't need possums, skunks or fox that near my animals. I think if it was a fox the hole would be larger and we'd have had problems with the birds.

I would think a possum or skunk would steal eggs too... so maybe a woodchuck is your culprit?

No garden to worry about here. No sun.... If it is brave enough to climb up onto my deck and into dog territory, it deserves any veggies it gets!!
