It worked!! I like it better than the store bought. It's much creamier. It was so easy. I just followed the directions in Nourishing Traditions. The cream I got may have helped. It was pasteurized but not ultrapasteurized. Very thick, not like big dairy cream that you get in a grocery store. Anyway, it came out great and I love it.
I have tried kefir. I killed my grains. I didn't like the kefir. This is soooo much easier. Just add a tablespoon of creme fraiche to a pint of cream and set it on a shelf in the kitchen for 24 hours. No grains to keep alive. I just have to remember not to eat it all without saving some for the next batch!

So since I'll be eating more veggies than ever I really really really want to expand my gardening. But that old shade issue just doesn't go away. DH has always been reluctant for me to take up a lot of deck space with plants but now with health issues involved I've got more leverage. He agreed that we should build gates to keep the dogs off the deck (the pug is a veggie thief, no ripe tomato is safe with him around) and devote the end of the deck under our bedroom window to container gardening. Currently there is a rarely used chiminea and a plastic box of broken outdoor toys that needs to be gone through anyway. The chiminea can be moved elsewhere giving me quite a bit of space. I've ordered and received some seeds already but I'm thinking I'll have room for more now. We're cleaning off the table in the basement that I used to use for large seed starting ventures. We'll have to make some sort of mouse proof covering for it just in case.
I haven't been this excited for gardening in years!
IF the community garden is successful too I'll be canning like mad all summer!
Had the second best asparagus ever tonight. Second best because only my grandpa grew the best and we ate it fresh from the garden.... I don't usually do anything fancy but tonight I made gingered asparagus from Mollie Katzen's The Vegetable Dishes I Can't Live Without. The greatest thing???? I'm the only one in the house who likes asparagus!!!!
Did I mention my Wii Fit Balance Board tells me I've lost 9.5 lbs since I got it just over two weeks ago? That was when I started
making some changes in diet, even before the diagnoses.
I have to thank you all for your support. You've been great with your hugs and suggestions and encouragement. It really has made this much easier than it might have been.

Good to know, thank you. Any reason you didn't like the kefir? How do the flavors compare? (Sorry for all the questions! :p )

Not a problem. I found kefir very sour. I might try it again someday because I'm already finding that my tastes have changed with the new eating style. I don't crave sweets like I used to. I never could eat plain yogurt with fruit. Now I love it. I might be able to drink the kefir now.

QA, I will be happy to post the recipe tomorrow. My eyelids are drooping and I need to go do my "wet sock" treatment for my head cold. Never thought in a million years that it would work. Well it does, at least at night. I sleep really well and wake up in the morning breathing through my nose.

I was giggling when I saw that your pug is a veggie thief! One of my dogs is too. I thought I was the only one and now I know I'm not alone!

He's not as bad as my first pug was. The whole reason we had to fence in the garden was not so much for the chickens but for Joey. He would rip the cherry tomatoes right off the plant, often destroying the plant in the process. AND the other dogs learned from him. They did less damage because they were taller. Don't tell me dogs don't see red because he sure knew the difference between a green and red tomato. Or least could smell that they were ripe!
