well. i've been too dang mad to say anything but i think i've recovered my wits now.
we were gone for most of sunday and when we got back and headed out for chores....
we found a dog down by the pond. eating one of my favorite laying hens.
poor Pebbles just didnt deserve that at all...and of course she isnt afraid of dogs because ours dont chase them! stupid people who let their stupid dogs run loose. i just dont get it.
we saw the dog. the good neighbors think its from down the road. i wanted to go down there and 'talk' with them folks but The Big Man apparently thinks i'm some kind of liability. so we are handling it his way.
yesterday, when he wasnt clearing down by the pond so we could have a clear line of sight....he was sitting on the deck waiting for that dog to come back. it didnt.
i have a feeling the Good Neighbors called the owners and told them that we were waiting on the deck with a rifle for their Mr. Woofeywoof... who'd never do anything wrong, least of all eat dear old Pebbles.
but life doesnt stop. even if i did have to bury dear old Pebbles in the garden. there was crying. of course it couldnt have been one of the no-good-nick roosters. i guess i should be glad the dog didnt just sport kill more of the hens... but dear old Pebbles was a good old gal and it was very sad to see her, half eaten, in a heap. i sulked most of yesterday.
so onward and upward. i've been working on getting everything in the garden taken up or whacked down. i'm planting the cover crops which worked really well last year.
lots of activity in the barnyard.
Floppy and her 5 chicks had their first big walk about, so they are now in the big day coop cuz they arent babies anymore. Mrs Beezley and her one chick, Neo, are out in the yard..and of course Mrs Dowlrimple and her Bugs are old hands at being outside.
Bianca..aka Pig Pen... and her one duckling, Happy, are the liveliest little things. she's a good momma and terroizes anyone who comes close. Happy is totally fearless and zips around like a little water bug. he sees me coming and runs to me. shhhh... i snuggle him.
we moved the inside Meeps to the goat/hen yard so they could have more room. they were met with disgusted looks from Debbie and Nibbles. now wonder - DB stands taller than Nibbles now! the rest of the geese are down in the pond screaming at their butts (or whatever).
tomorrow we are taking Vita back to the breeder. she's really at the end of her milking curve so its time. he's very happy to have her back for the winter and breeding. i still need a plan for Debbie and Ginger.
Ginger is just too meaty. she only gets about 1/2 cup of grain a day - but is bigger than the any of the neighbor's meat goats who get just a tiny bit of hay and mostly grain. so i dont think she'll be a good milker. we'll either sell her or Bourbon Red will get the carbrito he's been nagging me for all summer. or we'll breed her with the neighbors other meat buck (not her daddy) and it will be goat curry for all my friends next year.
;-)
so i dont know what i'm doing there. i'm pretty sure i'm gonna take Debbie to my other breeder friend who has la manchas. Nibble will go back to the same breeder b/c her babies were so darn cute.
thats the word. i need to get back to it. onward and upward, right?
